Well guys, the draft is officially over. There were some big moves and some bad moves by many different teams. I know I have posted on other posts but I thought I would give my final thoughts here. Here are my thoughts on the team I really care about...our beloved Brownies...
Round 4
Beau Bell - a projected 2nd rounder, who would have been projected high 1st round if not for a knee injury in the senior bowl. For him to fall to the early 4th round is simply a gift. He is said to be the hardest hitting guy in this entire draft class which I love. This is a guy who despite his position selected in the draft, can come in and make a difference from day 1. Remember he played ball with Eric Wright, so the chances are that he has been looked at not only the past year, but the previous as well as they were scouting Wright out. I think we will see him playing as early as week 1 or 2, given our lack of consistency at OLB opposite Kamerion Wimbley. My only worry is that he never fully recovers from his knee injury. I don't want to see another Lee Suggs on the team.
Martin Rucker - Led college football TE's in receptions and is IMO one of the most underated TE's in this draft class. I looked this pick over and realized it is a good insurance policy/hope for the future. There are 3 ways I see this pick going.
1 - Rucker takes over for Steve Heiden in being a quality backup for Kellen Winslow. Remember Winslow is injury prone, and with Heiden facing the possibility of never playin again, Rucker would be a great replacement for him.
2 - Rucker learns the system under Winslow for a year and takes over the TE spot the next year. Now you may think I am crazy saying that, but with JJ retiring at the end of the year, Winslow would be a great slot receiver. Put Edwards and Stallworth outside of him, and Rucker at TE, and you have mismatch central IMO.
3 - A combination of both. Rucker plays backseat to Kellen Winslow, and also plays the TE in different situations, and Winslow plays the slot.
I think all of these are not out of the realm of possibilities. I think the 3rd is the most likely of situations, unless you see us turn into a passing arsenal like the Pats last year.
Rucker also will play alot on special teams I think to replace guys like Chaun Thompson.
Ahtyba Rubin - a large (6-3, 326) NT to backup our DL. Was referred to as a diamond in the ruff player who recorded 42 tackles and 1.5 sacks his senior year. The greatest upside to him, is that he eats up blockers. He doesn't always get at the QB, but we don't need him to if he can eat up 2 guys and allow Kamerion Wimbley bust through there.
Paul Hubbard - 6-2, 221. A fairly big target for DA/BQ. Not jumping up and down for this pick, but we needed somebody better than Tim Carter in the 4 spot. I don't like using Cribbs...he has endurance issues and we need him on ST.
Alex Hall - 6-5, 219. Now I love this pick in the seventh round. He played is D2 football, but recorded 7 sacks and 15 tackles for loss each of the past 2 years. This guy is kind of like the Travis LaBoy/Antwan Odom/Darryl Blackstock we missed out on in free agency. I think they will bulk him up a little more, and have him play both DE/OLB as a situational pass rusher.
Overall Draft Grade - B+
All in all, given the low round picks we had to work with I would grade Phil Savages draft a B+. He doesnt get the A from me, just because I think they took Rucker too early...they could've gotten him later. And I wasn't thrilled that we did not address the CB issue.
