Well guys, the draft is officially over. There were some big moves and some bad moves by many different teams. I know I have posted on other posts but I thought I would give my final thoughts here. Here are my thoughts on the team I really care about...our beloved Brownies...

Round 4

Beau Bell - a projected 2nd rounder, who would have been projected high 1st round if not for a knee injury in the senior bowl. For him to fall to the early 4th round is simply a gift. He is said to be the hardest hitting guy in this entire draft class which I love. This is a guy who despite his position selected in the draft, can come in and make a difference from day 1. Remember he played ball with Eric Wright, so the chances are that he has been looked at not only the past year, but the previous as well as they were scouting Wright out. I think we will see him playing as early as week 1 or 2, given our lack of consistency at OLB opposite Kamerion Wimbley. My only worry is that he never fully recovers from his knee injury. I don't want to see another Lee Suggs on the team.

Martin Rucker - Led college football TE's in receptions and is IMO one of the most underated TE's in this draft class. I looked this pick over and realized it is a good insurance policy/hope for the future. There are 3 ways I see this pick going.
1 - Rucker takes over for Steve Heiden in being a quality backup for Kellen Winslow. Remember Winslow is injury prone, and with Heiden facing the possibility of never playin again, Rucker would be a great replacement for him.
2 - Rucker learns the system under Winslow for a year and takes over the TE spot the next year. Now you may think I am crazy saying that, but with JJ retiring at the end of the year, Winslow would be a great slot receiver. Put Edwards and Stallworth outside of him, and Rucker at TE, and you have mismatch central IMO.

3 - A combination of both. Rucker plays backseat to Kellen Winslow, and also plays the TE in different situations, and Winslow plays the slot.

I think all of these are not out of the realm of possibilities. I think the 3rd is the most likely of situations, unless you see us turn into a passing arsenal like the Pats last year.

Rucker also will play alot on special teams I think to replace guys like Chaun Thompson.

Ahtyba Rubin - a large (6-3, 326) NT to backup our DL. Was referred to as a diamond in the ruff player who recorded 42 tackles and 1.5 sacks his senior year. The greatest upside to him, is that he eats up blockers. He doesn't always get at the QB, but we don't need him to if he can eat up 2 guys and allow Kamerion Wimbley bust through there.

Paul Hubbard - 6-2, 221. A fairly big target for DA/BQ. Not jumping up and down for this pick, but we needed somebody better than Tim Carter in the 4 spot. I don't like using Cribbs...he has endurance issues and we need him on ST.

Alex Hall - 6-5, 219. Now I love this pick in the seventh round. He played is D2 football, but recorded 7 sacks and 15 tackles for loss each of the past 2 years. This guy is kind of like the Travis LaBoy/Antwan Odom/Darryl Blackstock we missed out on in free agency. I think they will bulk him up a little more, and have him play both DE/OLB as a situational pass rusher.

Overall Draft Grade - B+

All in all, given the low round picks we had to work with I would grade Phil Savages draft a B+. He doesnt get the A from me, just because I think they took Rucker too early...they could've gotten him later. And I wasn't thrilled that we did not address the CB issue.

I agree, not crazy about taking Rucker although his credentials are pretty good.

Likewise I love the picks of Rubin and Hall. I know they are late rounders and not to get too excited over, but we still need quality backups and they may be it.

Overall B-

Solid "B"   Bell being the high point,  but the trading of our future picks being the low point.

You are missing the major points of the draft.  anyone who pans out after the 3rd is a bonus.

The big questions on this draft are Brady, Rodgers and Williams

I can't grade them until after the season

brownskidmark,

I agree with you 100%.  Well, except for putting Bell at the OLB spot.  I think he's going to compete for the weak inside spot.  I can see Leon Williams and Beau Bell out there Game 1 due to their aggressiveness and ability.  I think that Andra Davis will be predominantly a back-up player this season (since his contract was re-structured) and D'Qwell Jackson could be on his way out after this season without some impressive numbers.

I was very high on Rubin and Hubbard before the Draft and I'm glad they could pick up both of those players, especially as late as they did.  I knew very little about Martin Rucker when he was drafted, but the more I read, the happier I am with the pick.  It's obviously insurance, since Rucker is the same type of tight end that Winslow is (the non-blocking type).  Since Chudzinski was/is a tight ends coach, I hope he can maximize his potential.

I'd give the Draft a B- to B+ grade, depending on the success of Corey Williams and Shuan Rogers.  I think they'll be huge for our team, so I'm leaning towards the higher end of the B-range.

I think we should have traded up to get Charles Godfrey.  He was the number one player on my board that the Browns could have gotten.  If they'd traded next year's third rounder and possibly the fifth (and tried to land Bell a little lower), I would definitely be grading this one an A-.

And that's a lot, considering how much I generally rag on Phil's drafting.

This draft is tough to grade because it was basically written off by the Browns in favor of acquiring players via FA and also the trade last year to get Brady Quinn.  That said, I don't have a problem with any of the players they drafted.  I especially like the Rucker pick as he has an NFL pedigree and can really develop under Winslow.  I see a few people posting that Bell will start this year and I think that is a real reach.  I think he will need to work to make the team and be willing to fill some ST shoes playing behind Williams and Jackson.  It will take him some time coming off an injury AND he will have to learn the ILB position in a 3-4.  The other guys are pretty unknown and it will be a pleasant surprise if they can make the team and contribute at all.

Williams and Rodgers are the key to the draft as many have said but even more then that is what ultimately happens with Quinn.  Quinn's situation and how it develops marks a very critical moment for this franchise.  I'm still on the fence about signing Anderson to such a big contract.  If Quinn sits the next 2-3 years and we get no production out of him nor does he get to demonstrate his value, thus squashing any interest from other teams, the Browns will have effectively tossed away this years first round for a back up QB which really hurts in the long run.  If Anderson turns out to be one year wonder, the team is still out all that money they paid him and even if Quinn shines they will have to figure out how to pay him to keep him.  I think the ideal situation would be that Anderson misses a few games this season with non-serious injuries, Quinn steps in and plays well, and then during next years off-season they entertain trades for either of the two.  Or, Quinn does enough in the pre-season to warrant serious interest from others and they trade him prior to the season starting for a top flight WR, DB or RB.

I agree the Browns did a lot in free agency and I hope it pans out. I have no idea who any of these guys were that were drafted and I agree if any of them step up it is a bonus and since they were drafted so late they can be signed cheap. I'm not understanding the drafting of a TE from Mizzou....I guess or have heard rumors we are expecting to lose Winslow to free agency in a year or two? I have them going 11-5 this year with or without impact draft players from this year...and a second round loss in the playoffs to Jac, Indy or NE. Baby steps until we get to the Super Bowl!  I just hope I see it in my lifetime!

I've spoken with somebody who knows Bell and he says if this kid doesn't start this year he'll be surprised. Good knowledge of the game, hard worker, gym rat, and a hitter.

Overall, good draft. solid B
