This most definately blows for Crean...I know that Hoosier fans want their team to be good soon, but it isn't going to happen soon.  Give Crean at least three years before he has a team that's respectable (not great--just respectable).  It would be a shame if IU fired him after three years just because he didn't win the Big Ten Tournament or something.

In any case, good luch Crean...you'll need all you can get.

dmberger,

Your comments are accurate, and I think IU fans (at least all of them I've heard from) understand the absolute clustermess Cellvin left us. The phone call violations were the tip of the iceberg. As such, and given the good reputation Tom Crean brings in all aspects of his coaching career, we all understand that this is not a quick fix.

I think the prevailing attitude is that we'd rather have a coach that takes his time and builds things on a solid foundation, rather than doing anything necessary to get really good really fast, which is what Sampson did. For my part, I hope Crean is at IU for at least 20 years, because I believe he'll do things the right way, embrace the tradition and former coaches/players (with the obvious exception of Cellvin) and make us proud of the program once again.

Perhaps Crean told Mr. Holman that "promises" made to by the previous coach could not be honored.

Crean made a mistake taking this job.  He could have gone anywhere (or just stayed put with a great program).  Why take on this hassle?  What's the upside?   Serious misjudgment on his part.   IU fan will not be patient.  Maybe for a year or two but not much longer than that.   And this program is 3 - 5 years away, minimum, from approaching the level they expect to be.

IU fans will not be patient?  I hope, for your sake, thats not accurate.  Impatience is what led to the desire to bring a proven cheater in, just because he "could coach"........the typical fan ( or I hope the small minority) that you say will not be patient needs to realize a few things: 1) IU tried for a quick fix with Davis, then with Sampson.  All they got you was a crazy man out of his league and a cheater; 2) IU has a solid reputation (the last couple years notwithstanding) of doing the right thing, academically as well as athletically, a rep gained and put in place by Bobby Knight, and Crean can get this program back to that level, given time and undertanding of the process; 3) IU is in a deep DEEP hole with the NCAA, a situation not helped in the least by the release of the acedemic scores, which were sub-par to say the least.  Anything they can do as an institution to get backj in the NCAA's good graces, they must do and, again, Crean can make that happen.

I don't pity Crean as many do.  I see a coach, confident in his ability to coach, AND to run a clean program, and one who welcomes this challenge.  Much like Mr. Knight was....

Don't feel badly for Crean - he knew what he was getting into. As a lifelong Hoosier fan (and alum) I couldn't be happier with him. We'll struggle to win ANY games in the Big 10 at least next year. However, Crean will become an idol in the process. It's stuff like this that creates your reputation (letting go Bassett and Ellis)... it will be difficult to tarnish even as the loss totals mount.

I feel we are all missing point.  This all would not have happen if Rick Greenspan would have hired Steve Alford.   Mr. Greenspan's pride got in the way from what happen between the two at SWMS (now Missouri State).  Greenspan and the president of IU should pay the price for the shame Sampson brought to this once proud basketball powerhouse.

Have faith IU fans. A coach of Crean's character, the fertile recruiting grounds and the exodus of underclassmen to the NBA will combine to get the Hoosiers back in the hunt really soon. Cleaning out Sampson's trash is the best thing that can happen. They will reload this year and contend in 2009-2010.

Good for Crean, and I have to say: I think that IU will out perform expectations this year. I'm not saying that they'll be great-- by any sense of the imagination-- but I fully expect them to finish in the top 2/3 of the conference come year's end. Anything above that is wholly unexpected gravy.

Kids coming to this program, especially after today's happenings, know what they're getting in Crean-- no nonsense. They will buy in fast and completely. They will be young, but they will be talented. And they will be out to prove that they can overcome the terrible position that they school has been put in.

Further, to come to a school that's in this situation when you have other quality options, like so many of our recruits do, means that you believe in/respect the school, the history, the program, and the coach.

Crean doesn't have to have a great first year. I'll still back him if we finish 11th. At the same time, I won't be surprised one bit if we finish in the top five-- though you all may think I'm crazy.
