guns just display americans fascination with power. power over someone else, anyone else. its truly sad and unfortunate that many people are now far more concerned with their own 'protection' than trying to help their community, state, country out in some other way. i don't have a problem with hunting, guns, or anything of the sort. it's the 'i gotta get them before they get me' mentality that spreads infectiously and poisons the minds of those subject to being exposed, regardless of their age. you can do/own/possess/imbibe almost anything currently illegal in this country in your own private residence in intelligent moderation and no one outside of yourself would know the difference. its when these things become abused, or used in forms of bravado/grandeur, or handled by those with insufficient intelligence/perspective/common sense that things get out of hand.

how could this be changed? i dont know. total cultural overhaul is difficult, but longer mandatory waiting periods for gun purchase, maybe some sort of exam/questionnaire that you sign off on what your intended use is. who knows. but its the mentality, not the gun. if guns didnt exist it would be knives, or swords, anything else available that would be misused because someone with the mindset of a 7th grader wants to 'protect' his assets, however much they're worth.

then again i dont own a gun. do you? why? collecting, shooting ranges, family heirloom, fair enough. protection? get a safety deposit box and a bank account. maybe im wrong, but this is a pretty embarrassing trend for this country, and its 'role models'.

im a recent college grad, and i hope i don't have to tell my children 'make sure you buy a lot of material things to display your financial success. oh, and make you you carry a concealed firearm to protect the things you really don't need, from the other people who also have guns, trying to get them from you'.

whatever happened to treat others how you would like to be treated?

I just thought I would share with you an actual email received in my inbox today that speaks to the "unavailability", as you put it, of the armor piercing ammo. Enjoy the read:

Some time ago information was disseminated regarding a pistol that can defeat body armor. The pistol is the FHN Five-Seven. The media has nicknamed this pistol the “cop killer” pistol because of its danger to police.

Last Friday, one of these pistols was confiscated by P/O Rick Haun from a suspect during a traffic stop on a signal 30 in Colerain Township . The gun was found after the suspect resisted the pat down. Attached is a picture of the confiscated weapon and the rounds that were loaded into it. As you can see, they appear to be small rifle rounds. The pistol was test fired at our range and the rounds penetrated both the front and back of the vest.

Please share this information with all of your personnel as well as with any other police agencies you deal with. While all weapons are a danger to our officers, this one poses an even greater risk and it has now made it into the hands of criminals in
our area.

Open your eyes to the facts because they are frightening.

I'm glad YOUR DADDY is a successful businessman and I would assume a legitimate one. You are right, I would prefer that certain guns be restricted so that it is less likely they are used against me, SOMEONE WILLING TO PUT THEIR LIFE ON THE LINE FOR YOU, when I'm doing my job.

You see, as wrong as you are you will never admit it. I don't want to take all the guns, I don't want to take anyones guns but the fact is there are some guns that just need to be melted down and others that need to be restricted.

I'm also quite aware that pre-ban is legal, I never said it wasn't. However, YOU should get your facts straight, although not illegal by itself, possession of body armor in certain states by felons is a crime and also the possession of it during a crime increases the penalty.

How many people have shot at you in your life? How many people have you shot at in your life? How many opened up on you with an automatic or semiauto? I'm just curious because it appears that you are either 1) very afraid or 2) have been in a lot of gunfights with criminals.

There is a difference, however, in a hunting rifle and a gun designed to penetrate body armor.Actually, no there isn't. Your common deer rifle will penetrate body armor just as effectively.

The Deer rifle that I am familar with has a .762 round or the equivalent to the round that goes into a M14 Bolt Action / Semi Automatice rifle used with the Infrantry. It will tear body armor to shreads.

The .556 that goes into the M16 has 30 rds in the clip and can may not shread body armor but will do some damage I gaurentee that I watch it happen.

There is a difference, one is made for the sport of hunting and the other is made for what legitimate purpose? I understand that both will do what they do, I speak only of the desidgn intent/purpose.

And, 5.56 will go through kelvar also.

Bluegrassbum, I would suggest more target practice and, more specifically, the body armor drill. That would be shooting the target/intruder twice in center mass and then once in the head. That way, kelvar or not you've got it covered. Also, try to do it after running and getting your self worked up some to try and mimic the adrenaline dump you will have going on, plus, try to be able to get all 3 rounds off in less that 2 or 3 seconds from a holstered starting position.

If you do that then you don't need to have a crazy gun.
