The latest interviews have Brandon Inge saying he is adjusting to and enjoying his catching responsibilities. Now I am by no means one of these Inge slappies as he is hitting under .250 again. However with Pudge being in the last year of a contract paying 13 mil and Brandon Inge signed for the next couple years,is it possible the Tigers let Pudge walk and save the 10 mil he would probably cost and net a few first round draft picks in the process ( depending on if Pudge is a type a or b free agent ). However is having Inge catching and batting .250 or so hitting ninth any difference than paying Pudge big dollars to catch and hit .250.

When Inge was the starting catcher before he was excellent defensively and couldn't hit a lick. He hits a little better now and I think he could be just as good defensively as he was before. It makes sense for Inge to be the 2009 starting catcher with Pudge being a free agent and no prospects ready to take over the starting gig. Its Inge or a free agent who most likely won't hit or field as well. This is kind of what Dombrowski was hoping for from Inge.

Whats going on with Vance Wilson? I know he is still hurt, but when does he come back. And what about his contract?

Brandon can and will play any position we ask him to play. I think we definately keep him and he can catch for us in the future. His batting average will continue to fluctuate but should get better. Brandon is too good an athlete to let go.

LOL. We'll keep Inge alright....for the simple reason that no other team wants a .230 hitter who has to be paid $19mil over the next three years........no matter how good of a fielder he is.

Cleveland may want him.  VictoMart can't even make a throw to second base... Everyone steals on him.  Yeah he hits great... perhaps move him to DH and DFA Hafner (how much is he being paid, btw? $11 Million a year through 2013?  That's well worth his .209 average.  At least Inge can play multiple positions and can throw out runners behind the plate.  AND he's not declining not on the books as long as Haf.  eeeek.

But I'd rather not have the issues the Yankees had for the series in the Bronx last week. Starting catcher on the DL so they send him down their emergency catcher for a pitcher and their backup gets hurt. They then got stuck with an unproven rookie catcher for a few days catching Hughes and Kennedy on a team with a huge payroll. I'll take Inge on the bench any day as he can play any defensive position and come in the late innings as a pinch runner. The point I was making is that it is possible if Pudge's numbers continue to hover around .240 they let him walk and take the draft choices and hand the catchers job to Inge who is under contract anyway the next two seasons. That would leave them with Pudge at 13, Todd Jones at 8 and Kenny Rogers at 8 off next seasons payroll.

Vance Wilson's contract is up after this season.

One thing to keep it mind with Inge's offensive numbers. Compared to the majority of starting catchers his numbers would be average to above average. Outside of a few guys like Victor Martinez and Joe Mauer most teams go for defense first with the catcher and don't expect or get much on the offense side. Leyland's comment that Inge could be an all-star catcher putting up his current numbers probably isn't far off.

Tha Tigers also have a couple experienced minor league catchers, Sardinha and St. Pierre, who would fill in nicely as a backup catcher to Inge next season

As far as Vance Wilson goes. keep in mind the Tigers are not wasting a spot by having a guy on the roster who only is a backup catcher. When Wilson returns than somebody like Ryan Rayburn goes back to Toledo. Just some thoughts. Ryan Rayburn is also the emergency catcher. I prefer have Inge and rayburn as the backups giving more flexibility for defensive replacements in the outfield in late innings.
