I'm not a huge Paul Maurice fan, but I don't see the point in this firing. The Maple Leafs are years away from competing, thanks mostly to the mistakes of the former GM. With the cap-killing contracts on the current roster, they can't make any significant free agent moves and they do not have a number one goaltender. So, why not just let Maurice finish out the contract, let Justin Pogge develop a bit more in the AHL and let another years worht of bad contracts fall off and then start rebuilding with a new coach for 2009-10. Whoever takes this team over has virtually no chance of sucess next year.

Yeah I agree with Crusader on this one. I thought the same thing myself when I heard of the move...It's like what did they expect Maurice to do with what he had... And to only give him two seasons is counterproductive in the dressing room as well.

I agree that keeping Maurice would save money and not hurt the Leafs while they start yet another 5 year rebuilding project (The Toronto Mao Leafs?) but they need to look like they are doing something.  The Leaf fans are cranky and none too smart at the best of times.  Right now they are out for blood.  Management had to tie Maurice to a stake so they could get back to work.

Well, I agree, but not for the same reason.

Maurice is not to blame for bad goaltending. Vesa Toskala was terrible until the last 2 months, and their defense lines 2-4 were pretty bad.

But, you need to realize this. The fans wanted something. The Leafs' will do anything to their fans, and they are the best at listening to them.

listening to your fanbase is fine and good. But only if you're doing the right thing going forward by listening to them.

I dont agree with this firing at all either. He is a standup coach and knows his shit. if the players stay in place for the last 7 seasons without any major changes obviously the growth is not their. To bank on some Marlies blowing up is not the right route. Mats is still solid, but Razr blows, Darcy is done and Nik is soft. Its the players, NOT the coach
