I don't understand the extent of coverage on this topic. The last few years that this Barry Bonds "steriod" scandal has been going on, people where calling for him to quit. Everyone in the press was suggesting that in lieu of these allegations, founded or not it would be better for the game.

Why now does there seem to be a call for his return, however slight the role? Why can't this be chalked up to a once great player, in the decline of his carrer? Jose Canseco always had a shroud of steroid allegations around him as a player, and within a few home runs of a career milestone, made attempt after attempt to come back. It is what it is, the bigger the name the more they will demand in pay.....whether skills are dimishing or not. The union didn't try and get Canseco back in to get his 38 homeruns, you belong on a major league field only if people think you deserve to be in the "here and now", not based off what you did in the past.

At some point Frank Thomas and Jim Thome among others will be in that same boat. Close too a milestone or still saying they can contribute on a day to day basis, but there is going to be some kid in his early 20's able to prove he can put up those 20hrs and 60 rbi's at an early stage of development and is not going to ask for near the salary or carry near the attitude and self entitlement that would come with Barry. The bottom line is, if Barry was the only guy out there who could hit those 20hr's and 60 rbi's then he would be playing no matter what baggage he carries. We all know that is not the case, so why take the heat if you don't have too....and let the next generation pick up the torch.
