Kentucky Coach Billy Gillispie announced during a Saturday press conference that he expects sophomore guard Derrick Jasper to transfer, and that the move will likely be finalized next week.
Speculation has run wild over the past several weeks that Jasper was looking to transfer to a school closer to his California home. The school brought up as Jasper's most likely destination? UNLV.
UNLV currently has two 2008 scholarships available, the 2nd opening up just this week when little used freshman forward Troy Cage announced his intentions to transfer from UNLV. It's been widely assumed among Rebels fans that at least one of the scholarships...should be choose to transfer from UK, and should he be granted his release...would be offered to Jasper.

I just hope Jasper is happy. From his comments it sounds like he likes being a Wildcat but he really misses home and wants his knee to rehab. I wonder if he ever considered redshirting this season and spending the summer at home to get his head straight and then making a decision about his future. If the need to be at home> than being at UK for him than I wish him all the luck in the world and will root for UNLV or whatever other team he goes to and hope he does well.

Ugh. I'm back after a day consisting of a 7-9 year old baseball game and a 1st grade pony ride birthday party. I need gin...STAT!
Leggy geze, this news sho nuff be a legit as it gets. This whole saga has been ongoing for weeks now. I'm just glad we're nearing a conclusion, regardless of what Derrick ultimately chooses to do. Ahhhhhhhh who am I kidding...I REALLY hope Jasper comes to UNLV. Despite what my buddy J-Dub's says, you WIN with guys like Derrick Jasper.
His offensive game...in regards to scoring...will elvolve I'm sure. Will he ever be a 20 ppg scorer? No way. I do, however, think he'll ultimately be one of those stat stuffer type ballplayers. 10+ ppg, 6+ rpg, 5+ apg...that kind of deal.
He's a big point guard who rebounds like crazy, and makes good decisions. He's a winner. I just hope his next good decision is heading out west to play for Lon Kruger. Whatever he chooses to do though, I wish him the best.

River, I couldn't agree more. Jasper has the intangibles of just being a winner. Regardless of what any nay-sayer may post, I'm not sure Kentucky makes the tourney last year without Jasper coming back. I truly hope Jasper lands at UNLV, he'd be a good transition player, moving Willis to the two and putting Jasper at the position he wants to play.

No matter what that silly ass J Dubs says, You're getting one hell of a player in DJ, if he chooses to go to Vegas. A PG that can give you 7-10 rebs is solid. He's developed a lot better shot, just needs to gain confidence. Good luck to hiim, he's always been a class act.

Never been a follower (not a fan, not a hater) of UK, but the vibes on this thread make me think this "Jasper" brings a lot to whatever program he is in. For UK fans, where myopia is a requirement, to be giving such kudos to a departing player tells me he must be a citizen as well as a player.

I dont understand why a lot of you are saying Derrick Jasper is a hell of a player. HE IS NOT THAT GOOD. There is a reason he is transfering guys.....becasue he knows that he has been recruited over and that his playing time is going to diminish. That is a bunch of nonsense about being homesick. Anyway....It does suck for UK that he is transfering because of depth issues. Jasper is a decent player that can contribute. If he ever gains confidence in himself and recover from injuries he may turn into a good player but he is not as of yet. You guys are also right about last year's team not making it as far as they did with out him. He played a huge role just because their was no one else that could contribute. That will be changing in the next two years. Good luck to Jasper in whatever he decides.
