Hopefully that got peoples attention. All I hear is people say "We want the Pats fans to admit to cheating... yada yada yada yada... we suck!" Fill in some of the yadas and you get the idea. So, what I'm going to do is present the rules that the Pats were in Violation of and then you can all decide what you think about it, cause I really dont care. I just think some people dont actually know wht the rules violation was and they just want to jump all over the Patriots. Once again, I believe they did cheat, but I am not sure as to the extent of the advantage gained by taping the way they did.
<o:p> <o:p>
Article 9 of the NFL Constitution & Bylaws states "any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game."
So, my interpretation is that it's ok to tape as long as the taping doesnt help you in the current game. Just to let you guys know, there is no proof that the Patriots used any footage in game (at least that's what Goodell said). I personally hope that if they did use it in game that it comes to light, and I will have personal speculation to the matter, but I never make a final judgment until something is beyond doubt. Also, the Patriots were caught filming several times while this was the only mandate in effect, but were not penalized because it was not ruled on that they used the film in game. Therefore, in 2007 the NFL implemented the following rule
Page 105 of the 2007 NFL Game Operations Manual states, "No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game...All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."
This means no matter if your intentions are to use the video after the game, it doesnt matter you cant tape from these areas. However, you are allowed to tape from areas where personel are not allowed access, meaning can not gather the tape and use it in game.
So, my conclusion would be as follows. The real crime that the NFL was trying to prevent was the use of film in game to gain an advantage. They clearly do not have a problem with filming the opposing team, as it is still allowed but restricted to the conditions aforementioned. Therefore, the only way the Pats were in violation of the rules prior to 2007 was by using the tape to gain competetive advantage over their opponents in game. (If it is proven they did this then I will be the first to say asterick the hell out of every win they've had since 2000). However, the only time they were in violation by having a member of the organization on a sideline was after the 2007 rule implementation. Therefore, they really have only cheated (as far as we know) for the first game of the 2007 season. Until there is proof that they used previous seasons tape in game, it is all mere speculation.

I know it's a lot to read, sorry about that. I just had to write a 40 page paper, so it seemed like nothing to me. Anyway, here's the quote from Jimmy Johnson that many people have refered to lately,
After footage from the actual tape was aired on FOX NFL Sunday on September 16, former Cowboys" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas_Cowboys">Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson claimed, "This is exactly how I was told to do it 18 years ago by a Chiefs" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_Chiefs">Kansas City Chiefs scout. I tried it, but I didn't think it helped us." Johnson also said, "Bill Belichick was wrong because he videotaped signals after a memo was sent out to all of the teams saying not to do it. But what irritates me is hearing some reactions from players and coaches. These players don't know what their coaches are doing. And some of the coaches have selective amnesia because I know for a fact there were various teams doing this. That's why the memo was sent to everybody. That doesn't make [Belichick] right, but a lot of teams are doing this." [<o:p> </o:p>

My interpertation is that they broke a rule and cheated. If they were innocent they wouldnt have been punnished. Stop these threads, its the same arguement over and over.
Pats fan: We are innocent, apologize everyone
Sane person: Why were you fined and stripped of draft choices
Pats fan: Pats are the best team in the league
Sane Person: Why did the Giants win the Super Bowl last year?
Pats fan: Belichick you are my god
Sane person: why are you on your knees for another man?
Now that we all know how this thread is going to turn out not need for further posts.

No one outside the Belicheat camp knows for sure exactly the extent of the taping--when it started, how many games?, which games?, what part of the games?, et al.
To me, this is no different than Barry Bonds' (alleged) use of designer steroids and HGH. Yes, you can insert anyone's name in here besides Barry's, but we all know of the contraversy behind 756. No one except Willy Mays' imfamous Godson himself knows when he started using, what he used, etc.
Therefore, consider the following:
Is it an absolute certainty that taking these measures--performance enhancers versus performance capturers--will translate into observable improvements on the field? No.
Barry Bonds still has to be able to see the ball well--Mo Vaughn was HUGE yet never came close to Bonds' numbers. Big Mac never hit for average, just power. The Patriots' players still require a good skill set and smarts to be able to implement whatever nefarious game plan Belicheat could devise.
However, the question still remains, is this use of "enhancement" clear-cut cheating? Yes. Simply put, if doing either one doesn't work that well, then why do it? Why risk getting caught?
Common sense should prevail: The Patriots are shrewd and talented. They have taken full advantage of the rules, loopholes and free-agency better than any team since the late 1990s. However, it is clear that they felt the need for an edge. In other words, they really weren't as good and they cheated to get there.
Remember folks, lack of evidence of wrong doing doesn't mean that the acused is completely innoscent.
No matter what anyone says, their "Dynasty," want for a more apt descriptive word, is no more or less tainted than any baseball record of the past 20-30 years.

Miked, part of being a fan is speculation and idle chat. Honestly, does what takes place on or off the field affect your life? It's entertainment and it's fun to engage in these excercises--albeit fruitless ones.
My advice to you is just relax and enjoy the harmless debates.
