First off, our starting rotation is amazing. Cliff Lee continues to be the best pitcher in the majors this year. Fausto earlier was stunning. Our defense finally looked great and made huge plays for Lee.

But the offense is horrible.

Hafner is a joke. His slump has gotten to him mentally and he shows no confidence. A DH with no confidence is useless.

Call me crazy....but I think the Indians need to look into getting Kenny Lofton back. He can play LF, you can put him at leadoff and put Grady down to the 3 hole and push Victor to the 4. We got Jason Tyner in LF today.....

Also, I know this won't happen, but I'd love to see Barry Bonds get signed. A guy with a OBP over .500 is good enough for me, I dont' care what baggage he has, our offense is that bad!

But still, we're what... .5 games out of first? Not bad when we haven't played our best lately.

The Tribe has an incredibly inconsistent offense, and yes it is getting old.  The starting pitching is pitching better than any rotation in the league.  How is it that a team can have a starter go 9 shut-out innings and lose?  Moving people to different spots in the order is not helping and something needs to be done.  This lineup's potential seems to get worse by the game.  As fans, we remember when each of these guys have had a hot streak over the last couple of seasons and hope it comes back, but almost everyone is hitting in the low .200's.  I hope they somehow pull together because someone has to help this awesome starting pitching.  This is pitching that can go through the playoffs, but you need some type of run support to win games.  Go Tribe!

bigdog, I agree with you on Lofton, I said it weeks ago, only problem is that Lofton at this point does not want to come back, hes looking for a contract of at least $6 million, the same as last year, and he wants to play everyday...i think we should get him and let him have a shot in lf over dellucci, but not for 6 mil, Bonds would greatly help our team, but his price is too high and he is a cancer, nobody wants him cuz of his steroid use...hafner is a disgrace, im really starting to worry that we will never see the great hafner again, back two years ago he was the best hitter in the A.L., now hes a weak hitting dh, a dh!!!! whos only effing job is to hit...IMO its all mental, Hafner came from a small Kansas hs with like 60 ppl total and then he went to a small community college...i think its the pressure thats got to him and hes been unable to handle it, i still think hes a good hitter, but its like hes going through an Ankiel-type period (Ankiel couldnt throw strikes-all mental)...whatever it is, he sucks, and hes hurting our offense...in addition, Marte is a joke, flat out, he hasnt gotten much of a chnace but neither has Francisco, difference is that Ben has produced when given the chance...we have lights out SP, weak hitting, and a pathetics bullpen, yaaaaayyyyy, changes are definitely needed

Slump? Hafner hasn't hit since last May. After one year, it can't be called a slump. Either he has a mental problem, a phycial problem, or he stinks. He's says it's not his shoulder so I think he stinks.  What's the point in having a DH who bats .215? He's has 3 HRs so far and he's got a pitcher's BA. Awesome. If you have to play the $8M designated "hitter" then at least bat him 9th, like a NL pitcher.

Lofton? Come on, let the guy go, he's not the answer. I'd rather struggle through the growing pains of Guitierrez and Francisco, then rent him for another year. Plus, Lofton is bad luck, he's been on so many good teams and can't win the big one. I think he was on the Steve Bartman Cubs team. Lofton is a jinx and doesn't have a strong arm.  I guess he's learned not to swing for the fences every at bat anymore, though....

One question: Is Barfield still on the team or did they give up on him already? I'm not sure they should let him go just yet. Brandon Phillips comes to mind.

Btw, Hafner is from Jamestown, North Dakota, not Kansas.  That's why the Minn fans love him. He's gets applause everytime he bats in the metrodome.

and no one is saying Lofton's the answer, but our mgr has played the likes of Jason Michaels in lf, Lofton provides hits, he gets on base and walks, he alwasy hits around .300 and we need baserunners, Grady is hittin around .270 and is too good a hitter to have leadoff, he hit over 20 homers last year he needs to hit 3...i say get lofton and platoon him with delucci/francisco in left, hell move them around at dh too, get that bum hafner outta there...if we could get lofton for the right price id do it, but not at $6 mil and not now, around the trading deadline or later if hes still unsigned, we need to give our young guys a shot, cept marte, hes a POS

Bonds might be an excellent option. He certainly is still hungry to try one more stint.

Cliff Lee has been nothing short of outstanding. And, again today.

Cleveland is right there. Hafner will come around as will the rest of the lineup.

How is it that a team can have a starter go 9 shut-out innings and lose?Um...when the other team has a starter/bullpen shut down the other team for 10 innings?

The only way Lafner comes around is if he gets back on those roids he was doing in 06. This guy has no clue at the plate anymore. I saw Downs throw him an 86mph "fastball" and Lafner fouled it into the 3rd base stands. The dude can't even get around on an 86mph pitch. His contract extension is starting to remind me of the Wayne Garland deal. Real nice Shapiro, spend 60 mill on a 30 yr old stiff and let a stud lefthander fly after 08.

When they signed Hafner I knew that meant CC was gone.  They can't afford both. And despite CC's recent suckiness, I'd rather have him at $20M/year than Hafner at $8M a year. CC is a great #3 guy in the rotation behind Lee and Carmona.

fmcdevitt05

Travis Hafner was  the valedictorian of his high school class. However, his graduating class (Sykeston, ND '95) only had eight students.

Not that any of this matters but you claimed he went to High School in Kansas.

Why is nobody talking about Shaun Marcum?  He was more lights out last night than Cliff Lee was.  Lee was actually getting hit pretty hard - just had the outstanding D behind him.  Marcum wasn't even getting touched.

Did someone up there really just call CC Sabathia a good #3 guy.  Shake your head.  Cy Young award....and you've got him slotted behind a second year starter and a guy who is maybe just rid
