Eight Belles' problem wasn't an abnormality, it was her lineage.  Native Dancer, a notoriously fast, yet fragile horse whose offspring are notorious for breaking down, appears four times in her pedigree.  She was bred to break down.  Unfortunately, she won't be the last.  The breeders love how the "Native Dancer" horses look and they get the most money at yearling sales.  The industry is in real trouble with or without the ignorant people at PETA.

I agree with you that the horses haven't been bred for the best characteristics recently, but if it wasn't for this one incident, would anyone be raising such a fuss? Horses break down, it's just part of racing. In fact, I'm willing to bet that anyone who goes to a track regularly has seen this occur. Not to say it isn't tragic for the horse, but it happens. One incident like this shouldn't cause so much trouble.
