June 1st hasn't been an interesting day on the NFL calendar in years. It used to be, but a few years back the NFL decided to let teams cut a player anytime after free agency starts back in early March and just designate the cut player as a June 1st cut (to get the benefit of spreading the remaining bonus money over 2 years).
What does happen though is that money that was on the books for those cuts, comes off the books as of June 1st.
Two players on the Raiders have relevant notes on this:
- LaMont Jordan doesn't appear to be going anywhere before either training camp, unless a rookie signing pushes his number off the roster (as the team will need to cut 5 players to bring the 5 drafted rookies to camp). This is because his numbers work with their salary cap right now, and he's better then the players not on the roster - but if he wants to make it to the season he's got some work to do both on the field and on restructuring his contract.
- Kalimba Edwards' no longer has a big salary counting against the Lions salary cap (he was designated a June 1st cut). This has no implications on the Raiders, but the Lions will be appreciative of the $4 million in additional cap space they've now got. The thing there was that as one of the top 51 salaries that the Lions "owed" for 2008, Edwares counted towards their offseason cap for $1 million in bonuses and $4 million in salaries - but now only his bonus - or the difference between his bonus and the total cap value of the 51st most expensive player - counts, and of course that makes things a little easier for the Lions.
