I figure there will be a lot of this over the next couple of months so why not start off now.  Personally I think he will retire after this year, yes I know nothing is offical yet that is just what my gut tells me.  Smoltz has been an absolute pleasure to watch over the years and once this year is over and if he and glavine and maybe Maddux all anounce there retirements I will start booking my hotel room in Cooperstown now...

I'm guessing also that it will be his last year. He's been one of my favorite Braves. Smoltz has always given everything he could toward his goal of winning a championship. His pitched through pain again and again to try to get another ring. He's gone to the bullpen and back to try to get the most out of his arm and also help the team.

John Smoltz said that he isn't retiring. He will take time to make that choice. I really expect him to be in a Braves uniform next season. I am glad that he is getting the surgery and he should come back strong.

Obviously he said he wasnt retiring, however I just think he will.  He will wait until everything settles down with this injury stuff and in the mean time coach his kids basketball team play some golf and enjoy life.  Then once the full scope of the injury comes out he will retire.  Just a gut feeling on my part...

I can honestly say this put some clouds in my day.  I'm still going to burn (because I have ultra-caucasian skin) at the pool today when I listen to the game.

Here's to Smoltz shocking us and giving us one more season, but that looks iffy at best.

Smoltz has indeed been a pleasure to watch pitch for the Bravos and has been one of the most dominating pitchers in the league over the last 20 years.  The ONLY pitcher in history to have 200 wins and 150 saves.  One of only 16 pitchers to record 3,000 strikeouts.  Cy Young winner.  A Hall of Fame lock.  It is sad that his career seems it may finally be over, but what a great player and teammate.  Took pay cuts, in effect, to stay in Atlanta.  Mentored younger pitchers.  Did what was best for the team instead of what he really wanted (being the closer). Played through pain.  Never seemed to complain about much at all.  A dying breed in professional sports, sadly.

Smoltzy will be one of those players that I tell my son when he gets older that I saw play when I was a kid.  Sad to see him go.

Hat's up for you John Smoltz he was the best ,and my favorite Braves player there is. It is so sad to see him go and I wish him the best for the upcoming  surgery he has to go through, and the rest of his career.
