I think the Mountain West could have a break out season with great opportunities for BYU, Utah, New Mexico, and TCU to have solid wins over BCS mid-levelers. By the end of the day on September 13, the Mountain West could have strong wins over: Michigan, UCLA, Washington, Stanford, and Arizona.
There is a very real possibility that the Mountain West finishes with 3 teams in the top 25 in 2008. With BYU's team and Utah's schedule, you could potentially have two top 10 teams!
The Mountain West must capitalize on this season's opportunity! It will be a huge stride in legitimizing the conference and to bring it out of obscurity. It's sad that the fact that the ESPN does not have a deal for TV coverage of MWC games results in sub-par coverage of the conference. But with 3 top 25 teams, they will not be able to ignore!
Is the next step expansion? It may be, but grabbing the right additions would be imperative. Many say Boise State is the next logical step, but I'm not so sure. They have had a great run for the last 4-5 years, but does it have the power to stay? May be not. I don't think the Broncos have the facilities or the market to strengthen the MWC.
I would like to see Fresno State do well. That school has some potential and definitely would be nice to add another school in the California.
I also have high hopes for SMU. Back in the '80's, SMU was a top program. Perhaps June Jones can right that ship. They would make a perfect travel partner for TCU (in basketball and other sports). However, the jury is still out. The SMU boosters have shown that they are committed to developing a quality program (Jones' hiring), but it must be settled on the field, so to speak.
Any other schools to consider in the West?
