The Bears front office made a great move keeping Benson over Thomas Jones.... Not only does Jones produce better on the field but he has none of the off the field issues..... Benson is a complete flop as a 1st round draft pick.....
As a former college football player myself, I often end up taking the players side on most issues but this guy is just a fool..... I have gave him the benefit of the doubt in the boating incident but I can't defend this guy...He has done nothing to warrant his high draft pick status and he continues to do dumb things off the field.... Goodell will surely do what the Bears should have done a while ago get him off the field.... After his disappointing year as a starter he should be focuising on being a better player, not a better Moron...

I agree with much of what you said. Benson has been a disappointment on the field with his underproducing and his injury issues, is not supported in the locker room, and now is displaying very immature off-field tendencies.
However, Thomas Jones didn't exactly light it up last season. I liked Jones, but he was a band-aid and would not have necessarily lit it up had he stayed in Chicago. Now that the Bears have addressed O line, time to hand it over to Forte and Wolfe. Thunder and lightning, Chicago-style.
Of course, without a reliable QB, it could be another long season.

I agree that Jones didn't light it up last year with the Jets.... With the QB and line issues they had I don't think he had much of a great chance to do so....
I'm not saying that Jones is a great back. He didn't do anything when he was with the Cards but he did perform when for Bears.... Even with no QB in Chicago he put up very respectable numbers..... Opposite to Benson, he worked hard in the off season to put himself in the situation to be successful and earned the respect of his teammates.... Benson has done nothing to get himself better and I really doubt that his teammates have much faith in him....

If you go back and look at last season, the Bears were missing two important ingredients in a winning football team. First you lost Mike Brown early in the season, again, and the high priced replacement, Adam Archuleta didn't produce. Leaving the defense vulnerable and without the knockout hitter a good defense needs to put fear into the opposing receivers. Other teams weren't afraid to come over the middle on the Bears D last year.
On offense, Rex wasn't the problem. It was a lack of a running game that caused defenses to lock in on the receivers and even Rex's eyes and make the big play against the Bears. Benson is an absolute bust. Whether he is innocent of drunk driving or not, he is still guilty of impersonating a NFL running back. The Bears need a runner to take the pressure off the QB and allow him some deception to hold defenses in check and let him get rid of the ball. Also, an every down back that can catch out of the backfield, which Benson hasn't proven he can even catch a pass regularly, would help stretch the field. All this would allow the Bears D a little more rest and maybe help them make a few more plays.

Lanceito44,
You need to keep in mind that prior to the two recent incidents, the only problems with Benson related to his poor play on the field. The Bears didn't cut him loose earlier because he didn't have issues like a Chris Henry, Tank Johnson, or Pac Man Jones - they were willing to give him the chance to turn things around on the field. The Bears have already shown a willingness to deal with players who have off-field issues - Tank Johnson is the prime example.
As far as the Thomas Jones situation you also need to keep in mind that Jones wasn't going to play for the Bears under his existing contract that would only pay him $2.5 million for 2007. After the trade, what was the first thing the Jets had to do with Jones? Give him a new contract..................he got a 4 year $20 million deal from the Jets with $12 million guaranteed.
Benson deserves the opportunity to have his day in court, but I'm willing to bet he won't be a Chicago Bear much longer. When you add the off-field garbage to his problems on the field, he simply isn't worth keeping around.

What everyone seems to be missing is the difference between Benson and Jones. Jones is a hard worker, Benson has had everything given to him.
But here's the one point no one sees when the Bears traded Jones, and everyone called the Bears idiots over it--Jones wanted Angelo to pick between him or Benson for the number 1 RB. As we have seen Benson hasnt produced, but if you were the GM, and your choice was between a 28 year old hard worker or a fresh, young 24 year old 1st rounder with his whole contract ahead of him at the time......you would take the draft pick. Obviously it hasnt proven to be useful, but they made the right move for the team. Re-signing TJ would have been useless if theyre wasting how much on Benson?
I for one, wish to see Garrett Wolfe start. Go Bears.
