I really though we would be lacking for depth at linebacker next year, but after researching a little, I think we are in a much better situation at linebacker than I previously thought. According to Detroitlions.com, if the season started today the starting linebackers would be Sims, Lenon, and Alex Lewis, who they say has been impressing in camp. Backing up Weak would most likely be Jordon Dizon. Backing up the middle would be Buster Davis. And backing up Strong would be Alfred Fincher (There's a good article about him on detroitlions.com if you havn't read it). After that there's still Caleb Campbell (who for now would probably make the team but primarily as a special teams guy) and Gilbert Gardner (who in all honesty might be cut, but is only in his 5th year and sounds solid.)

So, I thought depth would be an issue, but if we will be having to cut a guy like Gilbert Gardner, then I think we are going to be fine in depth. Now it's just a matter of the best guys stepping up and playing solidly.

jordantm15:  Where are you getting your depth chart from? Because DetroitLions.com doesn't have a real depth chart at the moment (if you can find one, I'd be very interested in seeing it) and I'm pretty sure that you've got your position projections off by a bit...

If I had to make a guess as to what the depth chart will be to open camp, I'd guess it would be the following:

WLB
Ernie Sims, Anthony Cannon, Tyrone Pruitt

MLB
Paris Lenon, Jordon Dizon, Buster Davis

SLB
Alex Lewis, Gilbert Gardner, Alfred Fincher, Caleb Campbell

In addition I would expect the Lions to keep 6 or 7 LBs this year, with the coaches ideal opening day starters being WLB Sims, MLB Dizon and SLB Lenon (back to his natural position).

Honestly though, besides Ernie Sims our linebackers are just not that good.  They don't have the talent of other linebacker units.  They have the worste linebacking corps in the division and are probably close to the bottom for the league.

I disagree that the Lions will have a good LB corps close to the bottom of the league.

That said, I do agree that they probably have the weakest LB corps in the division - but I don't know if that says a whole lot when you consider that our division has some of the best LB groups in the league.

Ernie Sims is a superstar in league circles even if the average fan hasn't figured that out yet and put him in a pro-bowl.  If you had to pick an untouchable for the Lions he would be the man, and rumors have it that a more then a few teams have approached the Lions with trade feelers trying to pry him away...

Paris Lenon is a solid SLB who's been playing the middle for us because he's been our best option there.  If he's pushed back outside to his natural position he should excel in that role because he was passable (not a liability, but not a huge presence) in the much more difficult/demanding MLB role.

If Jordan Dizon can show he can get things done even half as well has he did in college the Lions will have a solid trio of starters. Gilbert Gardner provides insurance if that doesn't happen or one of Dizon/Lenon gets injured.  Add in Alex Lewis, who is very solid on special teams and passable at SLB on defense and you've got a few more options.

Add in a more disciplined defensive line (Chuck Darby replacing Shaun Rogers will help) and a better secondary, and the linebackers will get chances to make more plays as part of an overall defense.  From that  I think you can trust that the Lions LBs will not be at the bottom, and have hope that they could climb their way into the above-average category this year.
