Religious dogma is inherently good AND inherently bad; it depends on how one elects to interpret it.  I can go through various religious texts and find all sorts of hateful passages that embrace slavery, murder, rape and many, many other horrible things, just as I can find great life lessons and inspiring stories throughout.

The question becomes, how are those that choose ti ignore the good parts, while focusing on the bad, any worse than folks like you who choose to ignore the bad parts in light of the good?

Moral of the story:  Those books are bad for society because they contain a lot of bad messages; if they decide to take out such great passages as stoning disabled children to death, then perhaps we wouldn't have such fundamentalists as Bin Laden, but as long as we keep trying to tout that the Bible, Qu'ran, etc, are inherently "good" we will continue to breed "evil" because "good" is a subjective term that can be read differently by different people.  Heck, one could call bin Laden a literalist by his interpretation of the Qu'ran, just as we have literalists who use the bible as a means to oppress homosexuals.

In other words, if a book says, on one page, "go kill someone", but says, "love thy neighbor" on the other, you can't be shocked when someone kills someone in the name of said book.

  1.   I must regress.I am NOT A RELIGOUS MAN I GREW UP CATHOLIC but when a call to our pastor that my mother was dying of cancer she asked for a priest and I was told WE DO NOT DO THAT ANYMORE  needless to say I don't reigion anymore. The books of religion are so steeped in bullshit it is hard to find the real message in it.I see one man has said that it takes years for more learnered men than me to even maybe understand it.I have never understood the rational for this even though I am a confirmed catholic I still do not understand what the bible is really about.I get the faith part but I still have to question the motive behind it.Now back to the origninal thread what was said is the TRUTH but still folks want to say that we should not get envolved.I read somwhere that EVIL MEN FLORISH WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING. I do not hate anyone just because of their faith, color, video game prefernce, etc but I do hate innocents gettng hanged from bridges, beheaded, raped etc. just to show how viscious they can be.We need to hold together as I am sure if we stay united in our war on terror we shall win.Bin Richardhead is counting on our resolve being shaked, which to this point has been sted fast,I hope and pray we stand, for to stop now will surely enbolden the enemy as shouts of paper tiger are heard again.Down with terror up with the liberty that our ancestors died for.

Yet again, you miss the basic point though.  Bin Laden was an ENEMY of Saddam Hussein......in laymen's terms, this means that they hated one-another.

This is NOT an issue of doing NOTHING; it's an issue of doing the WRONG thing.  First, 30-40 guys should not cost us over a trillion dollars and 4K dead American soldiers (and 20K+ seriously injured).  Nor, should we be fighting a war in Iraq, when Bin Laden, and his crew, are clearly in the Afghan/Pakistan region.

BTW, the notion that quitting will somehow "embolden the enemy" is completely ridiculous and ignorant.  Bin Laden LOVES this war with Iraq, because we are inflaming generations of people from that region, which is a powerful recruiting tool for him.  Bin Laden is now stronger and more important than he ever was before he attacked us due to Bush's misguided policies and lust for oil $.

Sorry, but everything you wrote is full of fail......

Brink,

I see why you stand where you stand.  You are not wrong to feel the way you feel.  My girlfriend who I plan to marry is Catholic as well.  I respect her beliefs.  My family who are all Muslim might not be totally happy with the fact that I am going to marry someone who is not of the same faith.  I do hope that none will be that drastic to not attend our wedding.  I can see how something like that can be traumatic.

You are right also that many religious people can be very judgemental.  I believe that a religious person who is being judgemental is one of the biggest hypocrits, as they are taking the task of god who is the one and only judge.  I try to not let people affect my views of the religion.  I do not let the the child molesting priests represent Catholicism just like I do not allow Bin Laden represent Islam.  Religion is not something simple that you either get or you don't.  It takes a lifetime to gain a grain of sand in the beach of knowledge.  It is sad that many people do not care for knowledge anymore.  They are too busy being entertained or trapped in their daily worries and other worldly issues to feed its mental and spiritual aspects

I say that I am Muslim, but in all honesty I should say that I am trying to be Muslim.  Reason being that Islam means Submission and a Muslim is one who submits (to God).  I admit I am not in total submission.  Now one of the things that my religion reiterates is that this world is temporary and merely a test.  Therefore, you are going to face many tests.  Its easy to be have faith when things are going right.  But what about when things are going wrong?  Sometimes due to these frustrations, people wonder why "would God do this."  However, sometimes people can't comprehend that we are merely human.  We have limits, mentally, physically, and spiritually.  It is impossible to figure out God's plan.

Take this metaphor as an example.  A human wants to build a house on top of a colony of ants.  He doesn't want to ruin the colony.  So he decides that he will move it somehow.  The blind ant cannot see the human, but maybe it can or cannot sense it.  Now is it possible for the human to explain to the ant that he exists and what his plans are?  Is it possible for the ant to comprehend the human?

Like ants humans have limitations.  There are many things that proves to me that God does exist; the beauty of nature, the galaxy, the universe, math and science, family, love, karma, Steve Young to TO against the Packers in the playoffs lol.  However sometimes people just need a more obvious clue.  Google the Quran and science.  You will find scientific facts stated in the Quran when Man's science had yet to discover these facts.

While the Bible and the Quran have many similarities just as Christianity and Islam does...they are not the same.  While I still respect Christianity and I believe that the message of Christianity overall is good.  The Quran states that the Bible has been altered.  The Quran is taught of as the manual to life by us.  I encourage you to read it in critical detail when you have a chance.  Worse comes worst the least you have to gain is knowledge.  Questions will not be answered without the effort of asking and searching.

Good luck brother, I did not take anything as an insult from you. I hope also that you do not take anything personal from me.

"If Islam is not brutal?"

The United States have killed over a million afghans and Iraqi's on this so called war on terror.  Does that make Americans Brutal????

"I have yet to see the leaders of the "good Islamist countries help in the removal of the "bad guys"or even side with us."

How can middle eastern countries side with an invading country.  That has bombarded their land??  Would you side with the people that flew those plains into the towers?

"Like I have stated before there has been a lot of killng on both sides but the cowardly use of terror to make a statement is lost to me."

Bombing a city which contain enemy and civilians from miles and miles away is not terrorizing or  cowardly?

"I may not be a follower of  the Catholic religion now but I have never seen a christian behead anyone on tv just to terrorize or any other dumba$$ excuse"

The Christian George Bush has gone and killed over a million people over there for the obvious reason of oil.  Is that a lot better than a couple of nutcases cutting of one guys head on TV??  You don't think out of that million people that got murdered none of them got their heads blown off or other body parts.  Does it make it ok that it was not on TV??

Would you let George Bush symbolize Christianity??  Of coarse not.
I would not let George Bush symbolize Christianity or the United States.

Do you not understand that the phrase "war on terror" is propoganda that attempts to make this war ok.  What war did not have terror in it?    Because they use guerrilla war tactics they are terrorists?  How do you think the US fought the British to gain their Independence?

How do you think the Afghans fought the Soviet Union.  When the Afghans were used like pawns by the US, to take down the USSR where they called terrorists.  The Mujaheedeen (holy warriors) were muslims that came from all over the middle east and went to fight the Soviet Union in the name of religion, in the name of fighting of invaders in an islamic nation.  The US supplied the Mujaheedeens  they weren't called terrorists back then were they???  When the CIA was teaching Bin Laden how to take down the Russian Choppers was he called a terrorist back then?

C'mon man open your eyes, open your mind.

This War on Terror can not be won by anyone.  One thing Muslims will not stand for is Foreign Occupation.  USSR had an army as great as the US in the 80's.  After their failed invasion of Afghanistan look at them now.   Muslims that had no
