I've watched the NBA since the mid-70's. Not only were those players in the same league in size and athleticism they were superior in basketball ability. As for the 80's Celtics being slow, they were the slowest team then too. But despite that, the '86 Celtics are still the best Celtic team I've ever seen, and they crushed all of the more atheletic teams they came upon. With a starting lineup of Bird, McHale, Parrish, D.J., and Ainge. And 6th man of the year Walton as well as Scott Wedman, Jerry Sichting, and Darren Day coming off the bench that team was a monster, too deep and too talented, and would have beaten this year's C's team. I mean come on are the Celtics of the 80's any slower than the Spurs teams that have won 4 titles including last year? no. As for the Big 3 vs Big 3 matchup---Bird, McHale, and Parrish all played big when it counted. Allen, Pierce, and K.G. were all too quick to disappear for long stretches during the playoffs. It's no contest. Doyel you're actually right. EXCEPT, do you remember a team called the '96 Bulls? They were as good, if not better, than the '86 Celtics, '87 Lakers, and every all time great that ever took the court in the NBA. So no the Celtics and Lakers of the '80's were not the only teams that could have stopped each other. Don't believe me? Remember that MJ scored 63 on the Celts in the '86 playoffs and forced them into OT on the Garden floor where they were 40-1 in the regular season! Now imagine if he had had the '96 Bulls with him in that series.
