I've watched the NBA since the mid-70's. Not only were those players in the same league in size and athleticism they were superior in basketball ability. As for the 80's Celtics being slow, they were the slowest team then too. But despite that, the '86 Celtics are still the best Celtic team I've ever seen, and they crushed all of the more atheletic teams they came upon. With a starting lineup of Bird, McHale, Parrish, D.J., and Ainge. And 6th man of the year Walton as well as Scott Wedman, Jerry Sichting, and Darren Day coming off the bench that team was a monster,  too deep and too talented, and would have beaten this year's C's team. I mean come on are the Celtics of the 80's any slower than the Spurs teams that have won 4 titles including last year? no. As for the Big 3 vs Big 3 matchup---Bird, McHale, and Parrish all played big when it counted. Allen, Pierce, and K.G. were all too quick to disappear for long stretches during the playoffs. It's no contest. Doyel you're actually right. EXCEPT, do you remember a team called the '96 Bulls? They were as good, if not better, than the '86 Celtics, '87 Lakers, and every all time great that ever took the court in the NBA. So no the Celtics and Lakers of the '80's were not the only teams that could have stopped each other. Don't believe me? Remember that MJ scored 63 on the Celts in the '86 playoffs and forced them into OT on the Garden floor where they were 40-1 in the regular season! Now imagine if he had had the '96 Bulls with him in that series.

The 1986 Celtics had a lot more than three big weapons. Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish. Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge. An aging but wily Bill Walton.Um, yeah - that's actually a big three and a few role players.  Just like this year.  The 1986 team was better offensively, but the same basic makeup.  Three stars and fill in around them.  I saw Walton play that year and he was little more than a name.  Ainge and Johnson were important parts.  Just like Perkins and Rondo.

professional sportsmen, on average, are better athletes than they were 30 years ago. simple fact. im not saying theyre better basketball players, but athletes everywhere, in every sport, are getting better and better.

but, athleticism doesnt automatically equal success.

this Celtics team still proly wouldnt have beaten the 86 team.

this Celtics team still proly wouldnt have beaten the 86 team. The 86 team would win in 4 games and easy sweep.  Im not sure this version of the celtics as good as they were in todays nba would have made the playoffs in 86

What about the teams from the 60's.  Did you notice Bill Russell hugging KG i was amazed to see he was a lot bigger then Garnett.  If im right those 60's teams had more HOF's then either 86 or 2008!!!!!

What year is this again?  I thought it was 2008 not 1948. At the risk of agreeing with the little klansman, I think the 86 Celtics would take this years version.  They were tougher having played in the era of hard fouls.  They had more depth and a tough defense. They also passed the ball much better and Bird was simply phenomenal.  I orginally hated Bird.  I thought he was over rated and the next "great white hope" but I quickly grew to appreciate his game the more I watched him.
