Another one died today in a crash during qualifying. His car said to be going 312 MPH, Cant they do something about this?

After seeing today's, it was a fluke thing. He was almost done with his qualifying run, and the car burst into flames.  After that, he lost control, hit the wall at the end of the track, and then it exploded. There was no chance for anyone to get out of it.

RIP Scott Kalitta.

There is only so much someone can do to protect a driver doing over 300 mph.

First of all it was a Funny Car,  When those big engines explode in front of you there isn't much you can do. Your confined in the car and now your breathig fire and an explosion like that probably took out the breaking system.  You really can't limit the Horse power because that will mean a boring race.  The hole shot will always win. the only thing they can do is try to come up with an emergency braking system that can be used as a backup system in case the primary is blown off, because of the speed, increase the stopping area at the track, or eliminate the Funny Car series all together.  Its a shame that Scott died in the very type of car that drove his father into the Top Fuel competition.  I believe it was a similar accident, the car blowing up in his face, that moved Connie into the Top Fuel Ranks.

R.I.P.  SCOTT

increase the stopping area at the track,  Exactly. I just posted a thread about how close that wall was to the sand trap. Ive seen drivers blow right through a sand trap but Ive never seen a concrete retaining wall just on the other side. Wasnt it Pedregon who went through the trap, through a fence and across a road before he got stopped? But he is still here today because it was just a chain link fence and not a retaining wall. Stupid thing to put at the end of a drag strip!

They need to make changes just look at what nascar did after Dale and andy passed away. Nascar been very safe since they made those huge changes. Its sad seeing people die doing something they love to do.
