I don't  think there is a whole lot to do the the cars, when eric medlin died it was severe tire shake and john force racing designed  a new pad system for the cockpit ,and now there heads don't shake between the bars in the cockpit.in the kalitta crash, the rear part of the body exploded and rendered the chutes useless, if you have seen the video the chutes are twirling in the wind not even trying to open.an explosion like that will more than likely knock  the driver out, in all probability scott didn't see the wall coming. the only thing i think they (NHRA) can do is lengthen the track shut down area. keep in mind that the majority of these tracks were built or designed when the cars were only running two hundred plus in the quarter, now they are at 300 plus. I am a drag race fan and i go to about 2-3 races a year an d every year the cars get a little faster.

RIP SCOTT!!!!

Sorry, but no it won't. The cars are built with burst panels to help release the pressure from the car banging the blower, or pushing a head gasket out. When the chutes are released these cars see a force of around -9g's and that doesn't knock them out. I have yet to ever see, hear, or read about a driver going unconscious from just an engine explosion.

Again, watch the end of the video, if its still up. The fire from the car is almost gone before it hits the sandtraps. Scott would have had to close the fuel lever off to stop flow and pull the pins of the extinguishers for that to happen. Also watch right before he hits the sandtraps and how much the rear-end is moving around, thats him grabbing the handbrake. The rear ends don't move like that unless the handbrake is applied and with a lot of force. Scott was trying to slow the car but the brakes aren't a measure for a quick stop. They are more-so used to help keep the cars under control as the chutes are slowing the car down.

Darn bleedblu,  I was hoping he was knocked out and didn't see the wall coming.  At least he was doing what he loved to do in the end.

I can agree, but the whole back half of the car isn't a burst panel.the burst panel is on the hood.in most blow-ups  as soon as the body comes off, the flame extinguish themselves. i really dont see the rear moving like you say it is, but that was a good thread.

The drivers have a release pin they pull when there is a fire. Its not just done from the body coming off. If that were the case they would never be able to lift the body off the car. Yes, there is a burst panel in front of the blower hat but there are also flaps in the back of the body (usually the tail light sections) the help release the pressures from inside the car. Even being carbon fiber these bodies can still easily be destroyed. Who knows how many passes that body has seen, or if it was starting to stress fracture in certain points and that explosion caused the chain reaction. Either way, point blank, had the shut off area been longer and without a wall Scott would be ready for Norwalk this weekend.

Also look for the white smoke before he hits the sand traps, you'll see the rear end moving back and forth.

Well.... you may be right about some of the things, i will get the works on a funny car. to set this straight. I am going to the mile hi nats. in denver next month i have a hook up with snake racing. in fact don and his family are coming into town the following monday  to go fishing and i will spend the day with them drowning worms and hanging out, so if i get the chance to strike up conversation about the accident and see what they think happened. if i get any of there thoughts i will let you know. peace out!
