I posted similar thread to this on the Kalitta article. I hate to be the guy who second guesses the race track but I was totally shocked when I saw the video of this crash. I my experiences, run off areas are generally longer than what I saw at this track and more importantly, why was there a concrete retaining wall at the end of the track? Ive seen cars hit the sand trap and flip over, Ive seen cars go right through the sand trap and through fences and all of those drivers lived because there was no retaining wall to cause the sudden stop that killed Kalitta.  Why was that retaining wall there? That track needs to have an open area after the sand trap to prevent impacts such as this.  Are there other tracks out there that have a concrete wall just on the other side of the sand trap? Ive never seen one.  Anyone out there know of another track like that?  If there is, they need to be modified also. It just doesnt make sense to me.

again, I hate to be the guy who looks for someone to blame when there is an accident but I was just taken by surprise to see that wall where it was.

I just seen the video on youtube and I do agree with you .. easily preventable. there's so much that could have been done to assure that didn't happen and at a minor expense.. it's a shame.

I wondered the same thing. When I saw his car literally fly into a thousand pieces I was stunned. I could'nt believe he hit the end of the track so soon! Like you I waited to see a ton of sand fly into the air, but it did'nt happen. Tony Pedregon was critical of the same thing when he was interviewed after the accident. It is a tragedy, and I express my deepest sympathies to his family.

To me the best way to take care of something like this would be to set up catch nets like they have on Aircraft Carriers just past the sand trap or even in the sand trap.  If you can stop an aircraft that misses its cable you can stop one of these cars.  The problem is what do you do when the engine blows up in front of you?  But I do agree there should not be a concrete retaining wall.

I don't know, I just saw the crash on my local news channel, I think he was in big, big trouble even before he hit the wall. They need to find out why that car just blew up like that. Mikeyfan's catch net sounds like a great idea, but a car shouldn't just blow up like that either.

I agree that they shouldn't, but you see that quite often at the end of a run and most of the time the driver gets out of it. If you were talking about the explosion after he hit, then all I can attribute that to was the fuel cell bursting. Not a lot you can do there either, other than not putting so much fuel in the car. I don't want to start speculating on what killed him, but my guess is it was the hit, and the explosion. In this case, I believe that a longer stopping area and no concrete wall probably would have saved him, but unfortunately we'll never know.
