It is great when a team has such quality starters at most positions that the backups can be debated.  However, as we know from last season those backups can be key particularly when injuries come into play.  The Colts have two very solid starting corner backs in Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden.  It will be very interesting to see who takes plays the nickel back spot this year for the Colts.  Opinions?

Tim Jennings is the returning nickel back but I think he is a bit undersized and got abused a bit by the bigger receivers last year. Both Dante Hughes and Michael Coe both have more size and should make that 2nd year jump. I think one of them takes over the nickel position and I would give the inside track to Hughes for right now. Rushing is only a returner and likely will have even less value at corner with the expected improvement of Coe and Hughes.

I really can't blame Tim for some things because if a team went to a 3-4 receiver set, a la New England, he was always lining up with Randy. You don't put someone 5-8 and over 30lbs less on a receiver like that. I blame the coaches for putting him on those receivers when I think he would have been better suited to play the slot guys, such as Wes Welker. Tim is a good open field tackler and quick, but he just doesn't have the size to run with the big receivers. Leave them for Marlin and Kelvin, with Bethea as coverage support.

Really Jim I think they are going to rotate the 3 of them in and out. Depending on the receivers I think they will give them all good playing time, since one will probably have to step up next year beings Kelvin's and Antoine's contracts expire after this year. Hughes can play safety and I think Coe has the ability to step in for Kelvin if they give him a good amount of playing time this year. I seriously hope they can sign both of them back, but Antoine and Kelvin are playing so good now its going to be hard to give them what they deserve yet keep it reasonable for the salary of the team.

I see them losing at least one of those guys that you mentioned too Bleeds - Bethea or Hayden.

As for Jennings, he would be an ok nickel but I see more potential in Coe or Hughes.  Ideally, you are right on Coe as he is similar in size (both are 6'0" and play to Hayden.  Jennings could still see a lot of time at the nickel but if Coe or Hughes have made siginificant improvement that could change easily.

Also, you are right again on Jennings and him covering Moss.  You have to play to your strenghs and the Colts strength would be to put a 6'0" corner in Hayden or Jackson on Moss.  Then again if Hughes or Coe were the nickel, they both have enough size to play Moss too at least better than Jennings could.  Jennings does have his strengths though and could make improvements too as he is young himself.  That is the exciting part is that this defense is so young at so many positions that it will only get better with the experience gained last year and the new players added.

They seem to like Jennings.  He ran a sub 4.40 (4.38 I seem to remember) coming out of college, and Polian raved about his toughness and tackling ability.  I think he's still the nickelback.
