We got a steal in Koufos. His shooting range with his size is such an asset. Had we gotten Hibbert, Fesenko and Hibbert would have had similar styles and not have given us a change of pace. Koufos, however, can stretch the D and can offer a completely different type of game. He's a lot like Okur, but Okur is not going to be here forever. Having a future at center with Fesenko and Koufos looks very promising if they pan out.
Tomic was a good pick because Utah has absolutely no roster space and Tomic won't be here any time soon. He has a lot of ability, but could use some seasoning. His current contract lasts for 5 more years, but Utah will buy him out in a few years if he emerges. I like that we drafted such a promising player who we can stash elsewhere to get experience. Tomic could be quite an addition in a few years.
Tadija Dragicevic is pretty much an unknown commodity. From what I've researched, he's an absolute stud on the offensive end. He can score from everywhere on the court from the post to the perimeter. The guy is a winner too. Don't know his contract status, but he might come over in the next couple years. He's only 22, so that won't be a bad thing if we get him now or later...
All in all, I think this was a good draft. Don't know if the 2 2nd rounders will ever do anything for the Jazz, but we don't have any roster room anyway. It's better to own the rights to potential European studs who come over in a few years than grab guys we cut in a couple of months. In hindsight, I never thought we would get Koufos, and I think he's a better big for Utah's system than Hibbert, Speights, or anyone else we were expecting to select.
Good job Jazz brass, now make trades to get rid of AK, Hart and Collins. AK for Al Harrington - makes sense to me...

I agree that is was a good draft... and I like that they have three bigs out of it, with at least one likely to pan out as a quality player in a few years. If anything, I think that todays draft indicates a desire by the Jazz front office to more or less stand pat this off season. I see them trying move Collins to make room for Fesenko, and Hart / Price to make room for Almond. I would like to see them hold on to Price, and (this will be unpopular) try to move Harpring over Kirilinko. Hapring, although he is a guy who has been with the Jazz through the rebuilding, is due to make 6 million next year.... that's too much for a streaky bench player who is getting old and more injury prone. The questions (much like Kirilinko) is will anyone take a player with such an inflated contract.
Koufos will play in the D league next year, and we'll see what he does there. Some of the games he played in the European U-18 championships are pretty impressive.... but he only hit his stride at OSU at the end of the season. He is probably a player that would have benefited from another year in the Big-10, but he should mature a lot during the next year. What I like the most, though, is the Jazz have 5 or 6 players that are expendable (all three picks today, Collins, Hart, Miles... there are a couple of others that could be included). Even if they don't pull off a trade before November, they will be in good position to be a player come the trade deadline next February.

I absolutly love our foreign bigs. haha. I think to make room we get rid of collins. He is a good guy but has done nothing for the Jazz and is as good now as he will ever get. We need space for our promising young guns. Otherwise to make room i wouldnt mind seeing Hart go. We have our young gaurds in Almond who, btw is a lights out shooter and Sloan should have him playing. But all in all i like our draft i would of liked to see us pick a player who could help us more recent.. but i think we have shown where we want to be. big down low and dominate in the paint. Not that Okur isnt a beast, but he doesnt act like he is a center. Our new bigs are going to be tough and Utah will finally have a defense. I wouldnt mind seeing a trade coming up maybe AK and someone else for a proven guard to play along side D-will. just like we had in Derek Fisher. GO UTAH!! :)

With the 23rd pick in the 2008 NBA draft the Utah Jazz select Kosta Koufos, suprised to see him fall in our lap especially when he was supposed to go in the teens. I was shocked to see Jason Thompson go #12 to the Kings which he was projected to go anywhere in the 20's to top of the 2nd round. Surpised to see the Raptors snatch Roy Hibbert at #17. And I would been fine with either one of these 3 guy's.
All in all glad to see it was Koufos even though he's like a Mehmet Okur clone but unlike Memo, Koufos is a good defender and when are point guard is Deron Williams and our HC is Jerry Sloan we should expect some good things from Kosta down the road.
As for Ante Tomic and Tadija Dragicevic we can keep them over-sea's for a couple of seasons and bring them over when we have more cap space just like what the Jazz did with Andrei Kirilenko.
Overall I would give the Jazz a B grade for there draft. Goodwork Kevin you really know how to pick 'em.
GO JAZZ

I just wish we would have got someone who could help in the now...We are so close. Jerry does not like to play the kids anyhow. I was hoping we took Sasha Kaun in the 2nd. I like his tuffness and he has a nice midrange game. He would have contributed right away.

I think Koufos plays this season. If we can't dump Collins, then Koufos might go to the D-League, but I don't think Utah is done making moves this offseason. Koufos is big who can shoot and play defense. Right now, he's already ahead of what Collins is going to give us. I also wouldn't be surprised if he was already ahead of Fesenko in terms of a total skill set and readiness for the league. One important thing - Utah needs to play both Fesenko and Koufos this year because of Okur's contract. Since Okur can opt out next offseason, Utah has to see what these guys can do on the court just to be prepared. I'm not saying they play a ton, but I think they contribute.
15 man roster for 2008/09 as of today (non-dressers in bold):
PG - Deron, Price, Hart
SG - Brewer, Korver, Almond
SF - AK, Harpring, Miles
PF - Boozer, Millsap
C - Okur, Koufos, Fesenko, Collins
The most expendable player on our roster is Collins. We have Okur, Millsap, Koufos, and Fesenko who can play center and have more reason to play than him. I'm not a Hart fan, but we only have 2 PG& | |
