WASHINGTON -- Orioles right-hander Matt Albers is likely done for the season after an MRI on his ailing shoulder revealed a torn labrum.

Albers can choose to rehabilitate the shoulder, which would probably keep him sidelined for at least two months, or he can opt for surgery and be out of action for eight or nine months.

"He's going to consider his options over the next couple of days and then go from there," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said.

Albers faced only five batters Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs before leaving the game with discomfort in his shoulder. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day.

Obtained in the December trade that sent Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros, Albers was 3-3 with a 3.49 ERA in 28 games, including three starts. Barring a surprise, those will be his final numbers this season.

"Obviously that's a real big blow to our club because he did such a great job for us," Trembley said.

It was hard to determine the cause of the injury.

"I think it's something that just doesn't happen overnight," Trembley said. "The way it was explained to me, it's something that progressively continues to get worse."

Well, that explains his struggles as of late.  He should just get the surgery overwith and comeback next season.  You did us proud Matt.

First Patton, now Albers? What is Houston doing to pitchers over there to set them up for torn labrums? Sarfate better be careful is right. That's a real shame. It's a good thing we have so much pitching depth in the minors, that's for sure. Looks like Liz will be here to stay and it's a perfect opportunity to get Burres back into the bullpen to take his spot. Who do we bring up in his place, though? It's too bad Penn can't stay healthy or he'd probably be getting his chance very soon. I think that if Burres pitches poorly again, that will seal his fate as a starter, but this could also mean Burres stays there longer than we'd like. Albers was probably first in line to switch places with him.

Man, this is really unfortunate. I can hardly believe it. We got Sarfate, Costanzo, Scott and two torn labrums for Tejada at this point. Bad times indeed. Good thing Scott has been doing so well.

Trust me, Torn Labrums are not a product of a throwing system.  Even with proper mechanics, etc... it is very possible to tear the shoulder girdel.  I should know, I did it back in 1997.  The bad thing about the tear is that you have a 50-50 chance to come back the same as before.  If Dr. James Andrews thinks the tear is small and could heal on its own, he has a better chance to recover fully.  The only problem is that you need to address it quickly.  I hope all works well.  Most pitchers come back losing 5-8 MPH on their stuff.  They go from great player to average arms.

Sess:

You beat me to it. I was going to say first Patton then Albers! Remember the post about pitching mechancics/ little league pitch count? The rate of torn rotator cuffs, a torn labrums in the MLB have been crazy. Just funny how it all comes together. Do you think the MLB has someone investigating the rae of these injuries?

This sucks.  Kid was doing so well overall.  This makes MacPhail's job harder, too, because it makes it a little tougher to deal away bullpen arms.  We need someone to pitch the middle of games.
