Honestly, JaVale McGee? I'm sure that he'll end up as productive and influential as the last big man to come out of the WAC, which says of course, nothing. Yes, he showed flashes of greatness, but he had virtually no competition and his team didn't even make the tournament. We still have Brandon Haywood and will be getting back Etan Thomas. I realize McGee is for when Thomas is cut loose, but still, we could have gotten something better.

Like Darrell Arthur. A proven competitor. A national champion who banged, bruised and overcame the toughest competition in the country. A guy we were projected to take in most mock drafts. And I know people will say, oh, there was the rumor of the kidney problem. Yes, there was. And who was the team that did the blood work on June 25th which showed he had no kidney problem whatsoever? The Washington Wizards. Grunfeld botched this draft, and we remain hopeful to sign Arenas and Jamison, and then rely only on guys like Songalia and McGuire to be strong rebounding threats, when we could have had another strong body in the low post.

Just because he didn't play against great competition in college doesn't mean that he isn't going to be good in the pros.  Ben Wallace went to Virginia Union, they aren't even D1.  Success at big college programs against tough competition doesn't always translate to success in the pros.  Look at all of those Duke players who ended up having mediocre careers in the NBA after having great college careers.  A lot of people compare Arthur to Antwan Jamison, but the Wizards already have a Jamison type player, the actual Antwan Jamison, who I am assuming they are going to do everything they can to resign him.  The fact that it took Arthur so long to get drafted on Thursday night should be an indication of that there is something about him that made teams reluctant to take him.

I am inclined to agree with you on JaVale McGee though.  I don't know what is so special about McGee other than a 7'5" wingspan.  From reading the description on him it sounds like he makes a lot of mistakes and can get dominated by wider big men.  He'll probably spend most of this year on the Dakota Wizards and it'll be another mid first round Wizards draft pick that will fade to oblivion.  I hope I'm wrong about McGee, but the Wizards haven't had success drafting the right guys this decade.

My exact thoughts.  When I saw Darrell Arthur as a freshman at Kansas I said "I want the Wizards to draft him in 2 years."  He was right there ready to be plucked out of the green room, and still the Wizards did not take him.  I was so disappointed that I now place unfair expectations on JaVale McGee.  He better be as good as Darrell Arthur in the NBA.
