How about we give Chow 2 national championships instead of the 3 Dodd (and every sports media outlet, especially ESPN) gives him?

In 2003 LSU was the BCS national champion, the BCS being the system agreed to by the college football powers that be. True, USC topped the AP poll, but that was meaningless under the BCS system. You can't approve a system, then when you don't like the result just pick a different champion. If that were the case, Georgetown would be the 1985 NCAA basketball champion (not Villanova) and Houston would be the 1983 NCAA basketball champion (not N.C. State) because we all know Villanova and Houston were the better teams, right?

USC has won ONE, count 'em, ONE national championship since 1979. Period.

Not a LSU lover or a USC basher... just would like to see people abide by the system agreed to. You can say USC was the better team in 2003, but don't tell me they were the national champion... they weren't.

"...because we all know Georgetown and Houston were the better teams, right?"

i agree that USC should not be considered national champions of that year, they did not win the BCS title game.

As a Trojans fan, I love how the AP/BCS things burns you all up.

Sorry dudes ... they will continue to be credited for TWO, count 'em, TWO national championships. Booyakasha. Hate me all you want.

C'mon, can we please stop this tired argument? The AP has been around since 1936 awarding national championships. The BCS has been around since 1998. Let's not forget in 2003 that USC COULDN'T finish No. 1 in the coaches' poll because its final No. 1 vote is foolishlishly locked into the BCS title game winner.

Going into the polls that year USC was No. 1 in both the coaches and AP. What happened? Both LSU and USC won their games but the coaches were bound by Grant Teaff law to pick LSU.

There's nothing wrong with split national championships.

Dennis - Thanks for reminding our Baltimore fan of the facts. I was sure they usually bred those Maryland boys a little smarter than that.....

Can't stop it Dennis, especially when someone like you just throws in the AP as if they were split from the BCS formula.  I might be wrong, but I do believe that the AP was part of the BCS formula in 2003.  I believe they split after that season.  The BCS is designed to provide one National Champion, and LSU owns that crystal trophy, not USC.  USC signed on to the formula, as did LSU, and every other university that wanted to play for a NC.  There is only one trophy, and LSU has two of these.  I remember that when USC finally played for one of these trophies, and won one, they seemed a wee bit more enthused, as far as what I read and saw that week.  I'd bet that that AP trophy is not nearly as highlighted in USC's trophy case as the crystal.  I sure know that LSU would never trade a crystal for an AP, and neither would USC, or any other NC.
