I have seen the last couple of games that Wellemeyer has pitched and he just doe not look right. How about any of you who saw the game? I don't know if it is his inflamed elbow giving him problem still and he is trying to pitch through it or what it is. Either way, he looks like he needs to get his body right before he makes another start.
He said he felt fine after the Kansas City start, but his results were better too. Even when he got out of jams yesterday, his control was still spotty. Hopefully it was just a bad day, and not a physical issue or a case of him mentally struggling to come back.
It's interesting that the Cardinals called up Brad Thompson and had him pitch four innings in relief of Todd Wellemeyer last night. Thompson looks to be the choice to slot into Wellemeyer's spot in the rotation should Welly end up on the DL.
Welly hasn't been right for a few weeks now. The Cardinals have been trying to finesse it, but it may be time to just put the guy on the DL and let that elbow irritation calm down once and for all.
Well his start prior to last night was actually against Detroit and he pitched fantastic in that game, he was lifted early in that game because of his restricted pitch count. There were no reports of discomfort or inflammation after that start so I'm assuming everything is/was fine. If I had to guess and I didn't see the game last night so I can only guess as to what the problem was. But my guess is that maybe his mechanics were off a bit. If this is the case they should be able to iron it out between starts and we'll see how he does the next go around. If it happens again I might start to think that he's not feeling well and a DL stint may be needed. Also do remember the Mets have a pretty good line-up.
I hope you're right, akbled. Perhaps it is just a mechanical issue. I can't imagine that the Cardinals would keep sending Welly out there if there was even a hint of a serious issue. Remember, though, that this guy has topped 100 innings just once in his professional career, and that was seven years ago. I'd hate to see this guy end up with a lengthy injury that could have been nipped in the bud with a little bit of prudence.
There is no question they wouldn't run him out there unless he felt 100%. They said before they wouldn't do that, and they rested him for a week or so. The only way I can see them sending him out hurt is if he simply isn't being honest with them about how he feels. You see mechanical things pop up all the time with guys over the course of a season, maybe he was a little hesitant because of the elbow and started tipping a pitch.
