lets just start by assuming ther as even as the Red Sox in talent so we avoid that argument which I don't want to go that way

here's what I've said for the past 3 yrs. and will say it again on where the problem lies

CHEMISTRY!

getting right to the point: Abreau, a Rod and Gimabi all think their something special. Abreau jogs around like he has his feet on egg shells and constantly smiles like the cockiest of the cocky. A Rod- where to start.. Big mouth, players don't care for him ( teammates that is), distraction imo and a bad apple to the younger ones. It actually seems like Cano is starting to walk and look like Abreau. They think that since they wear the pinstrips "their the greatest thing that happened since slice bread

yje so called "mixture" is not there

when they got Damon they lost out long term with his diminishing skills BUT they got a "Millar type" player that added chemistry; always smiling and great for a clubhouse.. Too bad he had to learn another way of life in the N.Y. run atmoshere of short hair and neat appearance

Giambi- a load of a 1st baseman that can't throw the ball around the field nor play it.. off and on hitter that seems like the George, Hank duo gets to him.. tries to hard and fails it seems

You so funny Bucky. Did all the Yankees players give you a call and say we can't stand Arod. The only one that supposedly don't like Arod is Jeter.

I don't know if I buy the Chemistry reasoning. More likely, the woeful RISP performance by this team is why they find themselves where they do today. Not much they could have done with Lester-a gems a gem, and they happen, but there was no excuse for how they let Beckett and then the Boston pen off the hook yesterday-time and time again. Starting pitching has been spotty, bullpen has been terrific, but the offense is what's killing them. They already have posted virtually the same amount of 2 run or less scored games as they did all of last year, and we're only halfway through. That's an alarming statistic.

Someone, or more precisely, someones are going to need to sack up and get some damn hits. 2 more with Boston, then 2 with Tampa. Yanks are perilously close to completely falling out of this thing. It's up to them if they're going to stay in it.

Yeah, I don't buy the chemistry thing, either; the chemistry, with basically the same team, was able to put together a lot more offense, and a huge 2nd half rally to get into the playoffs, last year. I do buy the lack of clutch hitting, for basically everyone on the team;2 outs and a runner in scoring position, forget about it, unless it's maybe Giambi or Damon, these days...

......Same team as last year but older less pitching.....

I think you hit the nail on the head.  I am not saying chemistry isn't a factor, but teams do not necessarily have to get along to win.  They just have to do the right things on the field.  I think the real culprit for the Yankees is the starting pitching.  Compare the starting rotation of the Yankees to other AL contenders:

Yankees......Opposing batters are hitting .289 against Pettitte with a .420 SLG.  They are batting .276 against Mussina with a .434 SLG.  Wang has been decent, with .249 BA against and only a .335 SLG against.  Rasner has not been good.  Opposing batters are hitting .303 against him with a .470 SLG.  Ponson is not the answer.  Counting his time with the Rangers, opponents are hitting .311 against him with a .447 SLG against.  Joba Chamberlain is very good, but he is still adjusting to the rotation.  In the pen, batters were hitting under .200 against him, but they are .250 against him as a starter.  His .297 SLG against (combined as SP and RP) is excellent, but he still needs to go deeper into games.
