Paul Konerko has not played since June 17 and is expected to come off the DL on Tuesday. With Joe Crede Struggling 2-18 in his last 6 games coming into Sundays game, the team needs to sit him down. Crede is a good defensive third baseman although his bat means more. Crede does not have to hit 40 hrs but can drive in runners by hitting sacrifice flies to advancing runners by hitting the ball the opposite field or being more selective at the plate.
Konerko also struggles before going on the dl. Kornerko 8 hr 30 rbi and hitting 215 is a slump. I look at Konerko as the leader and a captain. Maybe some day retire for this franshise. Kornerko has changed the outlook for the White Sox from day one in 1999. He stood up to Frank Thomas he speaks well in the media and knows how to compete day in and day out. Kornerko from the Northeast area also knows how to compete against the Red Sox and Yankees. He knows you have to play hard everyday to win. It may be tough in 2008 to hit 30 home runs like he has done over the years but can drive in runners maybe with a higher average. Kornerko does not need to hit the home run ball as much with power being planted from Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome, Carlos Quentin, Joe Crede, and Nick Swisher. Brian Anderson should hit more with more experience. My point is for the team to play small ball to beat the crtical matchups in the second half of the season. The White Sox usually play well vs the Detroit Tigers even though they lost got swept on the Road.
Overall, Team character and team chemistry is high on the south side. Power is the game in the American League but for Konerko is about him stepping up as a leader to being a clutch peformer.
Soooo, who do we put at 3rd if you sit him down? Ozuna, umm hell no. Despite his throwing errors this season, Crede is the best Defensive 3rd baseman in the league. He's just been in a hitting slump as of lately, has carried this team for a number of games.
Seriously, you want to sit a guy because of a 2-18 streak ? Wow. Almost every players in baseball goes through a stretch like that during the season. Remember, they have over 600 AB's per year. Crede had a great AB today, where he worked the count, fouled off some tough pitches, and then walked with the bases loaded for an RBI. We won by one run. Even thought it was not a hit, stuff like that is really important.
I am a fan of Joe Crede as much as anyone and through suffering years of the White Sox I have seen this team up and down and I just mentioned his play. I know that everyone can not hit at once and Crede had a good April and May. I just think that this race is tight for the lead and the Twins and Tigers are not going to fall apart so maybe rest for Crede for a couple games is not a bad idea. Pablo Ozuna actually has played better in his last couple of starts.
I am not against Crede just want to see the team play well.
Joe Crede is still a MUCH better option at 3B than Pablo Ozuna or Josh Fields.... you keep him there and he will get things figured out. The White Sox are playing well heading into the All-Star break... let's let these guys get healthy and see what they can do the second half.
As far as 2008 is concerned Paul Konerko is not the "key" to anything and will help the team the most on the bench which won't happen. His best "help" for this year is to stay out of the way. Forgetting about Konerko's batting average for a moment, in 2008 Konerko's claim to fame is as a rally killer. Runners on in scoring position he usually pops up or hits into a double play. As for his statistics this year, what you see has pretty much occurred independent of the situation on the field, not when needed except to pad a score or when the Sox have been out of it to the point of it making no difference.
Sitting Joe Crede without him being injured would be just plain dumb. From what I have seen on TV or heard on the radio Joe's immediate problem is that he is currently unable to center the ball so he is either grounding out or popping up. This will pass unless he has an unidentified eye problem and this should be checked out just to be safe. Otherwise, you don't sit one of the best 3rd basemen in baseball.
