Fortunately for all us EWilson does not work in the Mets front office or else we might our team might revert back to the good old days when Donald Grant ruled the front office and traded away Tom Seaver for a couple of baloney sandwiches!

"Sorry, I meant in the World Series hunt, not simply the hunt for the playoffs."
I guess this is where we have different viewpoints. For me and several others in this thread, if you make the playoffs, you are in the hunt for the World Series. Anything can happen when you make the playoffs. It isn't always the team with the best record all season that wins the World Series, (usually this is not the case) but the team that gets hot at the right time, like the Cardinals did in 2006. It sounds like you want them to win the World Series every year and that is a difficult task for any team.

And how many World Series has the current front office one? I forget....oh wait, it's hard to forget something that hasn't happened.
As a Mets fan who has to live among annoying Red Sox fans, I've at least been honest enough to see that their model for winning World Series works. They may not win every year, but they are World Series threats every year playing in a really tough division.
The current Mets team cannot make that claim. Instead, all I see are a bunch of people HOPING that they win a weak division, then HOPING that they get hot at the right time. I think they can do better, but that will mean a little short term pain.

Here's the main reason the Mets should NOT be sellers. They have beat up on all the teams ahead of them in the standings, this team as it is built right now can win. They need to get their head out of their you know whats and start beating the teams below them in the standings. They are not allowed to have letdown games anymore. Give Manuel a chance to prove he can keep this team up for the letdown games. As mediocre as they have been this year, they can still be in first place at the break if they take care of business this weak against the lower division teams.
It's definitely not time to give up yet.

Now it makes sense!
As a Mets fan who has to live among annoying Red Sox fans
Let me tell you a little secret - that great formula of the Red Sox lead to an 86 year daught!
The Red Sox built around a few key players in their farm systems and added a bunch others via free agency. The Mets thought they were doing the same thing with Reyes and Wright. They have some other talent that is near MLB ready - 2009-2010, that they can bring up.
The Mets have a good core of 3 starters, 2 OF, 2 IF and a C that they are bringing back. They will compete for years to come (and by compete, I mean for the playoffs, which in turn means for the WS).
And with that, I am done with this thread, because as you so aptly stated, "you win" and who can argue with such persuasive logic?!

EWilson, you make excellent points about the re-treads and also the lack of depth @ Triple A. Those are very true. However, the Mets have talent @ AA and that's illustrated by Binghamton having 5 All-Stars and also being close to first place. One of those not chosen was Jon Niese who is our best pitching prospect. So there is hope. Also the drafting of Davis and Havens should add much needed depth. They'll probably be @ Binhampton next year at some time and those @ Binghamton will be @New Orleans or even with the Mets.
The Mets in effect will do both. They can't see Delgado, because few want him. Those who do, won't offer much, because he's been so devalued by his play and attitude. they may use him as a DH or part-time player waiting for an injured player to return. They may dump him if they have a decent 1B man available in a trade.
The Mets won't probably make a huge deal because they did that with Santana. Unless they want to include Martinez or Niese, they don't have the depth in the minors to do that. They'll probably look to add a corner OF like Ibanez, Winn, Guillen or perhaps Nady or Bay. The latter 2 will be much more difficult. Omar may decide to add an arm for the pen. I don't expect Fuentes( seems Tampa bound), but perhaps a lesser reliever from a team like Cincy, Houston, Pittsburg, KC, Toronto or Cleveland. Those teams are just about done.
I'd be thrilled if Omar added an OF with pop and another reliever. Other than that, I'd stay pat. This team is heading in the right direction. I feel this will be the opposite of 2007.
