We all have our take on the situation that has been ongoing for the past several years at QB and RB for the Chicago Bears. But a writer for Yahoo! Sports has taken it one step further in this latest piece. Vinnie Iyer believes that the Bears made the right call in getting rid of Cedric Benson and they should take it one-step further and think about parting ways with Rex Grossman too.
Let’s face it—the Bears are out of their element trying to be a dynamic passing team. They have their best success when their defense is dominant, the special teams provide a spark and the power running game comes through to close out victories.
As for Grossman—unlike Benson—no matter what happens in his camp competition, he will be a Bear from now until the end of the season—simply because he’s already signed through ‘08 and the team doesn’t have any other backup quarterback options on its roster. As for their starter, the Bears should just go with Orton.
They already know what they have in Grossman, an inconsistent, erratic and indecisive passer who isn’t very durable.
I think we can ALL agree with the Cedric Benson thing. I was onboard with that manuever regardless of how big a hit he was to the cap. But the question remains is Chicago REALLY through with Rex Grossman? I don't think so. Should they be?
Well... I will leave that to your discernment. I'll leave you with this final note from the author...
Orton should have the edge [heading into camp], however, because a) he’s younger and hasn’t had his “full” evaluation yet and b) he once proved he can do enough to help the Bears win a lot of games. His style also fits, because he’ll be willing to dink, dunk and handoff—anything to manage games well and win them.
