Thanks for your post and yes, I'll explain why overpaying people kills the league.

When the league was shut down for a year, one of  the reasons was because salaries got out of hand and there needed to be a salary cap that would allow not only small market teams to succeed, but even mediocre size markets as well.

Simply put, when you have guys like the ones you mentioned in your post making inexplainable amounts of money, then what happens is when other players become free agents, they use those numbers when negotiating.   Then those players get way overpaid.. and it goes on and on..

Eventually, small and medium market teams can't afford to keep their own players.. people will steal them at stupid salaries...

i'm a detroit fan, believe me they can afford to easily pay whatever people want. even if a few seats are empty right now because of the economy... but teams like nashville, columbus, atlanta.. and whoever else are gonna die if they have to compete with salaries like that...

I agree salaries should be lower, but for different reasons.  Fans that appreciate the game should be able to take their entire family to a game without dropping 2 weeks wages on the tickets for 1 game.

As for teams like Nashville, Columbus, Atlanta...they can't compete because their cities don't care about hockey.  So move them or fold them, and the league is better off.

So I think that we can all agree after much debate that it is in the best interest of everyone involved that the leafs fold. I'll put a call in to the powers that be and let them know what we've come up with.  I imagine that they will let them play out the season but don't renew your tickets for next year.  Where will Mats Sundin go in the offseason since his team is folded.  Will they have a mini draft to select leafs players.  We all know most won't be added to other teams rosters because they shouldn't be on the ice anyway but there are a few.

If you're doing that, don't forget to send in a petition to the PGA asking that Tiger Woods be banned from the sport of professional golf too.  Look at the facts.  Because of his dominance, he's got Nike sponsoring him, thus increasing golf's "cool" factor.  Because he's the first minority to be so popular in this particular sport, young minorities are starting  to take up the sport as well, hoping to be the next Tiger.  What does this all mean?  Thanks to Tiger, golf has become a sport that is becoming increasingly more overpriced, and the golf courses are becoming more overrun with too many people, making it more difficult for the golfers that appreciated the sport before Tiger came on the scene to both book and afford tee times.

Sheesh!

If the above argument sounds logical to you, because it is factual, then send in your petition, then seek professional help.

Loyal Hab,,,, please .  If your going to try that, then do it in a way that makes sense.  There is no sense in comparing golf to what my argument is... it just doesn't care at all... and no, almost nothing you said is "factual",, so if your going to be sarcastic, make sense please,, i'd appreciate it very much.

See, Tiger woods gets paid in 2 ways. One, the smallest part, maybe 10 mill or so a year, is for the tournaments he plays well in and makes the money list.  The biggest thing for him is endorsements. He makes about 40 million a year because people profit off of him...... so he affects nothing his competitors make.. unless they are as marketable. NObody can go into a contract with nike asking for tiger woods money...

Toronto on the other hand pays mediocre players monster salaries and raises the bar for other smaller market teams that suffer due to the stupidity of the leafs organization... furthermore,  they make the same cash whether or not they win or lose... they obviously have no interest in winning so my logic is simple. Why spend at all?

Toronto can literally have 18 skaters and 2 goalies minor league quality and they will still sell out.. corporate cash does that.... so why ruin it for other people?

all your other junk, was complete junk....

It makes perfect sense, like you always say, READ CAREFULLY.  My point was not based on how much Tiger woods makes, or how good he is.  My point was that his popularity and "cool" factor has a direct relation to the spike in green fee prices and equipment costs for the average golfer JUST LIKE the popularity of the Toronto Maple Leafs has a direct relation to the prices they are able to charge for merchandise and tickets.  Same thing.

Who cares what calibre the Leafs players are?  I certainly don't.  In fact I'm glad that they lock up players like McCabe, Belak, Raycroft, and others because it keeps them off my team!  Who's getting screwed?  Leafs fans, by choice.  If they don't want to pay, then don't. It's simple.

How do their salaries raise the bar?  Don't you realize that there is also a cap on what individual players make? (I believe 10 mil was the highest allowed for this current season).  If they want to give Kubina "Lidstrom money" they're free to do that.  Nobody else will.

You talk about junk, let's talk about your stupid idea for a petition to can the Leafs, like you're going to convince the NHL to start hating the idea of making money.  They won't even can teams that are bleeding money, they're not going to throw out a team in the most densely populated hockey market in the world.

Your hate for the Leafs goes beyond normal.  I mean, as a Habs fan, the Leafs are natural enemies, I love to see them lose, to be perfectly honest.  But that doesn't affect my ability to understand the contribution that they make to the NHL's success in Canadian TV ratings, the city of Toronto's identity, and some of the most storied rivalries in the history of professional sports.

By the way beyond that, which one of my statements in my arguement were not "factual"?

Is Tiger not the dominant golfer on the PGA tour?

Is he not sponsored by Nike?

Is he not the first minority to achieve this level of success in the PGA?

Is golf not increasing in popularity?

Are the prices of golf equipment / fees not on the rise?

Like I said, you can use facts in any argument you want, it doesn't mean it leads to a smart conclusion, which is why most logical people would look at your proposal, and think you're an absolute moron.

Tiger woods increasing popularity is a lousy example, here's why.  You assume the prices of golf equipment/fees are on the rise everywhere?? once again, wrong.

Pricing depends on supply and demand in any industry.  Tiger woods has not had the same effect everywhere you go. The city I live in for example hasn't changed one iota when it comes to golf..

Anyways,, getting bored with you.............

Here you go .. one last detailed response in this thread , then i'm done since there is nothing i will ever say that you will completely understand... but i'll try one last time...

First of all, unlike the toronto Maple Leafs,  tiger woods "employer" hasn't done a thing to raise prices anywhere.  They pay woods based on performance.. they give everybody the same opportunity to make what woods mak
