ACC Tournament history is rich in tradition and excitement. In 1953 the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) formed and stated that the winner of the conference tournament would receive automatic NCAA Tournament Bid. The ACC teams have always been known for their basketball, but the ACC Tournament allowed them to show the rest of the nation. The tournament has been known for its domination by tobacco road schools. In fact, the tournament has only had one year in which a school from North Carolina has not played in the finals of the ACC tournament. In 1990, Georgia Tech played Virginia to snap this streak.
Since 1954 the record for each team to win the ACC Tournament is as follows:
UNC - 16 wins (1957, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2007)
Duke - 16 wins (1960, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1978, 1980, 1986, 1988, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006)
NC State - 10 wins (1954, 1955, 1956, 1959, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1983, 1987)
Wake Forest - 4 wins (1961, 1962, 1995, 1996)
Maryland - 3 wins (1958, 1984, 2004)
Ga. Tech - 3 wins (1985, 1990, 1993)
Virginia - 1 win (1976)
South Carolina - 1 win (1971)
Clemson - 0 wins (reached finals in 1962)
Fla. State, BC, Miami - 0 wins
So from the above history of the ACC Tournament you can see why it is not likely that Clemson will win it and that UNC and Duke are.
