What in the hell is baseball doing? The Red Sox went over to Japan and played two regular season, and now they come back to America and play an exhibition game? This makes absolutely no sense at all. Baseball needs to get its problems in America (steroids, hgh, loosing popularity to the NFL) solved before it worries about ridiculous exhibition games overseas.

hockeyry.....i agree with everything you said except one thing.....they lost the popularity game to the NFL more than 25 years ago and they'll never be in a position to try and win it back.
having said that tho, MLB is popular in its own right and hopefully the worst of the steroids era is behind us...

Look, the Japan thing was insane, I agree, but don't bust baseball's chops over this idea in L.A. This game drew 110,000 fans, and was a great tribute to the history of the Dodgers. Baseball needs to do more to play on the history of the game. THAT'S how you make the fans get over the steroids issue. The real problem for baseball is that they are pricing the good seats that my Dad treated us to to teach us the game for $10-$12 a piece in the late 70's are now $2500 a piece. My daughters only like minor league games because those are the only great seats I can afford. Major League Baseball to them is a giant field with 10 dots on it from 2 miles up. There's your real problem with the game.

The Coliseum sold out for the nostalgia and the novelty. It was cute to do this for the 50th anniversary, but fortunately they didn't mar the regular season by playing a real game there. The left field was bad enough for exhibition games.
The Japan trip was a dumb overall idea. Baseball is hugely popular in Japan, and in fact the Nippon leagues had already started. We were interfering in a foriegn country were we really didn't need to be (boy, that sounds familiar somehow...)
If baseball wants to have exhibition games in places were baseball isn't seen, to further promote the game (like Europe, or maybe even Pittsburgh), then fine. But baseball is an international sport, huge in Asia, Mexico, and Central America. Just because football and basketball are doing it doesn't mean baseball needs to, as well.
What ever happened to the times when Cincinnati, home of the first professional team, held the first game of the year? Or does history get thrown out in favor of the almighty dollar?

How else do you increase the popularity of a game that has a waning fan base in America? You expose as many people as possible to it. Whether that is in a foreign country or in a wacky exibittion game that draws 110,000 fans.
Who doesn't like seeing a Catcher to Center Fileder put out of a runner stealing 2nd? lol
I think MLB is in a no-win situation. On one hand you have baseball purists who bristle at the idea of change. And on the other hand are a generation of fans that are used to fast food drive-thrus, microwave popcorn and instant messaging. How do you make a stately and elegant sport like baseball appeal to masses of people that don't know the meaning of delayed gratification?

Hockeyry, I agree with you. This is just silly. The first two count but these don't??? So has the season started or not? If they wanted to play this game, why not make it count and get the Dodgers to play a division rival or at least a National League team. Baseball is just lost, Bud Selig, get packing.

They must be doing something right if 115,000 people showed up.
