With UMass making a great run through the NIT, Doug Gottlieb brought up the fact that Travis Ford will have a few phone calls to answer regarding coaching vacancies. The one he said specifically was Cal. Would it surprise anyone if Travis Ford leaves this year, win or lose against Ohio St?

I wouldn't be suprised if he did leave.....these days, coaches tend to change jobs like free-agents in the MLB.  However, I would be greatly disapointed if he did leave b/c I feel he did not complete his mission at UMass.  He is so close to bringing this program back as a power-program.  True he has back-to-back 20+ win seasons, true he took the Minutement to back-to-back NITs, and true he has them in the NIT finals and possibly winning the whole NIT, BUT....and this is a big BUT.....he has not brought them to the big dance and until he does (a couple times) his mission/grade is incomplete.....he's close, but not there yet.

I hope he stays around for a while or at least until they get sick of Gilespie in Lexington, KY....that is obviously Travis Ford's dream job.  The UMass AD needs to step up and do whatever it takes to keep Ford in Amherst for the foreseeable future......w/ the Football program potentially moving up to 1A from 1AA, the basketball program regaining prominance, the hockey and lacrosse programs playing solid year in and year out, UMass is well on it's way to turning itself into a solid all around athletics program and one of the premier programs in the Northeast.....where it should always be.

GO UMASS!!!

Or just Google Travis Ford LSU. A number of blogs have Ford as LSU's top candidate, and one has him being offered the job already.

Are these Programs really that crass that they would have approached a coach the day before he has a title game?  I mean come on, wait 24 hours.

I understand LSU's side to speculate, and put it out there that they are interested.  But to actually approach him seems, well, rude!

I agree whole heartedly with UMass99 that Ford's job here isn't done.  He's on the brink, but he needs to get University of Massachusetts over that next hurtle, otherwise he's just a flake, and I feel thats not the reputation a coach wants just in case his next job goes sour.

Funny I was thinking about posting this thread this morning:

Travis Ford is speculated to sign with LSU at the end of the week. Comes back to my whole theory on the lack of the AD screening/researching prospective Coach's. Why hire someone who's heart is elsewhere. Use your program to catapult/further advance one's career. Where did all the loyal Coach's dissapear too. The media stirs the pot up real nice... reason so many Coach's are froggy at the end of each year.

UMass AD better be fishing for the next Coach. Do some research this time around or match Ford's offer although he's a southern guy (SEC) maybe those New England winters took a toll on him... likely (OUT)

Young kids committ to programs then are in disarray when Coach's leave. NCAA has to step in someday.

I hope Gibbs/Cosby stay committed.  Gibbs will be a true asset to the 2008-2009 UMass campaign.

If Ford opts to leave.  While at UMass he did a great job.  However, he never took the team to the dance, leaving room for improvement.  Recruiting will also be another issue and the importance of using the blueprint of the run and gun offense to fill up the stands and keep the buzz around in Amherst, MA.

One day Pitino will come back home to UMass.

If Travis Ford leaves right now for a school like LSU, he is foolish.  There is still work to be done in Amherst.  Until UMass is "Big Time" once again, it would be thoughtless and selfish for him to leave.  He could leave his legacy as well as get paid handsomely in endorsements if he decides to stick with the Minutemen.  Be a leader, not a follower coach Ford.  There is more to life than a big paycheck.....Go UMass!!!!

I would not fault Ford for leaving.  He is a great young coach and is looking ot leave a legacy which is why he would be looking to go to a power house conference if they call.

UMASS was very good with Calipari and they are getting much better but many coaches unfortunately look out for #1 rather than what is best for the kids.  Donnovan almost made that mistake this year.

I honestly would be upset to see him leave. There is only one place i would like to see him go and you all know where that is. But if he takes another job, it would only be to better himself, and you can never blame a person trying to make themselves better....
