HOUSTON (AP)—St. Louis’ Albert Pujols and Houston’s Brandon Backe had a heated exchange as the Astros left the field after batting practice on Wednesday.

The exchange, which happened in front of Astros manager Cecil Cooper, lasted a few minutes. It involved yelling and ended with Cooper putting his arm across Backe and guiding him away from Pujols.

The incident apparently revolved around Pujols sliding into Astros catcher J.R. Towles in the eighth inning of the Cardinals’ 5-3 win over the Astros on Tuesday. Towles said Pujols called the clubhouse after the game last night to apologize for the way he slid into home plate.

Towles said he thought Pujols slid into him instead of sliding into the plate, but that he accepted his apology and “it was over.”

Backe, a right-handed starter, said Pujols approached him and asked why he was “pressing on about it.” Pujols wouldn’t discuss it in detail, but said: “he had a problem with me calling over there.”

“You guys don’t need to make this bigger than it is,” an obviously annoyed Pujols said before walking off.

Backe had plenty to say about it though.

“I felt violated,” Backe said. “I felt like he confronted me at a wrong time. I don’t think it was very professional.”

Backe was still red-faced from the exchange several minutes after it ended.

“It’s apparent that we don’t like each other,” he said. “That’s OK. There’s plenty of other people I don’t like in this game. It doesn’t matter. The competition between he and I just escalated.”

Backe is an idiot Pujols apoligized and Albert Pujols is one of the last people I would want to get in a fight with, the man is huge.  I thought it was funny how Backe said the competion was escalated between him.  I'm guessing more times than not Pujols will win that competion.  Brandon Backe what a joke.

Brandon Backe really is an idiot. What is the name for a supposed-to-have-been? What a fraud.

Then you guessed wrong. He's 2-0 against the Cards in the post-season.

2004 NLCS, Backe pitched an eight-inning shut-out against St. Louis without allowing a hit or walk until the 6th.

2005 NLCS, he gave up one run over six frames.

Rag on him all you want, but he owned your Cards when it counted.

That was 3 and 4 years ago!  I'd put my money on Pujols any day of the week.  Who the hell is Brandon Backe?

Pujols is a bit-h.  Backe could slap him down with an open hand.   I hope he aims for his head the rest of the season.  That is, if fat Al isn't on injury reserve.

Backe couldn't hold Pujols' jock. However, it was a cheap slide; I'm glad Albert apologized. Don't know why Backe got involved at all; Towles said it was over.

If Backe throws at Pujols' head at all, Tony will be head-hunting for Lance Berkman and/or Carlos Lee. Tony is old-school; he doesn't play around.

On the other hand maybe I should thank Backe for getting Pujol
