Bill Lynch has been given a new contract to remain the IU head coach through July 1 2012. Did IU make the right decision?

Coach Lynch did a great job in the face of adversity and the players are behind him. This was the right decision also because bringing in some big name coach or some guy who turned a lesser team around (i.e. Mark Dantonio) would be a terrible idea. The new coach would come in and completely change the system on offense and defense and then demand that the players to not only trust him on it but also buy into it completely. (However, it would be nice if the new coach tried the option). Bill Lynch was the right choice.

I really hope that I am wrong and he is the man to do it, but what he did at Ball State was not that good. They were bad and that was after a long string of solid teams he took the program a step back. They almost lost their D 1 status because they were bad and people stopped going. I was a student at that time and we got in for FREE and no one went. It was bad.

I hope he has a better feel and can do some good, but I have my doubts.

We're talking about IU Football right?   Since it's been about 15 years since we went to a bowl game and we haven't really been all that close too many times in the seasons since 1993, I'd say, why not give him a chance?!  No other style of hiring has worked. NFL experience (Cam Cameron) didn't pay off.  Former big time program coach didn't work (Gerry DiNardo from LSU).  We all know that if it turns out that Lynch takes the Hoosiers down the all too familiar Road to Nowhere contracts are made to be broken.

Once they made the bowl game they had to hire him.  They have played better than any IU team in the last 13 years or more.  I know very little about Lynch.  My only concern is that he has the passion and vision to ignite excitment about IU football.  That is what Hoeppner had that the others were unable to do.

This year alone he does deserve the shot.

the thing you have to realize is that IU football isnt going to attract many coaches...carroll, brown and not even charlie weis arent going to be leaving their cushy jobs to come coach IU. We found our perfect guy in hoeppner, but due to the unfortunate circumstances we had to give the reins to lynch who took us to a bowl game. He proved that he could have some success, and frankly I think he deserves the job after rallying our players after the loss of hep.

the real test is going to be recruiting. In order to keep IU football from filling up memorial stadium in red only when OSU comes to visit, he's going to have to get some talent into indiana, and thats a pretty tough task. It takes the invention of the forward pass by Knute Rockne for notre dame to have enough prestige to get good players into indiana, lynch is going to have his work cut out for him in the upcoming seasons

Sorry guys I have to say no for the simple fact the players were on a mission to get it done regardless on who the coach was.

I don't think Bill is the man for the future. I hope I am wrong. I hope he is the sleeper that can bring us into consistent top 25 finishes.

Lynch kept Heppners team inspired but simply does not have what it takes to recruit and will eventually turn your team into a finesse style program. He ran Ball States program so far into the ground that it has taken an excellent coach (Brady Hoke) 4 years to pull the nose back up and get recruiting back to respectability.

Bill is a nice guy. But this is a brutally competative business and he simply does not have the name or the coaching style to produce a big ten contender. If you can keep a soft schedule, like the one upcoming, he will get you 7 wins or so each year. The Central Michigans, Western Kentuckies, And Ball States however will need to be games that you play very well in or they could be very disasterous losses for IU.

Good Luck any way you slice it. Terry Heppner (spelling?) was no doubt the man to take you to the next level where Illinois is going and where Michigan St will be. We all miss Terry H. He was really something special.
