Has the Stanford job dropped so much in prestige that they hire an assistant? Seriously? No offense to Dawkins, but there are plenty of head coaches out there who should have been pursued with vigor, and let a guy like Dawkins start out as a head coach at a smaller school in a lesser conference. The PAC-10 is not supposed to be a training ground for first time head coaches…
The PAC 10 just got a little toughter. Yes, it will take 2-3 years before he starts to get his own recurits. Once that happens Stanford will be tough again. As for now Stanford will be a bottom feeder.
Congrats Johnny D. I am surprised that he got such a high profile job right out of the gate, but it's about time he got a chance to prove himself. I hope he doesn't turn out like Matt Doherty when he came to Carolina as we all saw, he wasn't ready for a prime job.
This is what I like to see, my two most hated teams working together to make both of them worse. Duke loses their top assistant, and Stanford gets an unproven coach. Great news.
Johnny Dawkins will make a heck of a coach! He was coached by Coach K and he has studied with him and Duke for years! He knows what he is doing and I wish him the best of luck! I wish he was still with Duke, but I was able to go to Duke's Awards Banquet last week and Coach K said that he would not be surprised if someone tried to steal him or anyone of his coaches away from him to become a head coach and you know what coach K said, He would be proud and would be honored when that happened!
As a Stanford fan I am excited about the hire. I think he will bring a real exciting brand of basketball with him. Anyone who spends as many years as he did under Coach K is bound to be a great Xs and Os coach. If he is able to recruit, he should bring Stanford back to the top of the league.
Next year could be tough, especially if Plumlee decides to not come. Being from North Carolina, hopefully this hire will change his mind.
Great hire Stanford! Johnny Dawkins has been groomed to be a head coach under Coach K at Duke and will be able to win at Stanford. His first job is to improve Stanford's recruiting and get it on par will the other Pac-10 powers which I'm sure he'll be able to do. We'll miss him at Duke, but we couldn't be happier for him as well. Good luck Coach Dawkins.
