Dude, MailDemon, the Redskins had a great draft. They picked up WRs that fit into their new system. There was no good value at the positions you listed during the first few rounds. The offense has to be more diverse than the standard 2 WR formations. If you look at most of the recent Super Bowl Champions and you'll notice that they usually have at least 3 good WRs and 2 good TEs. Look at the Giants (Plax, Toomer, Smith), Colts (Harrison, Wayne, Clark, Utecht), The Greatest Show on Turf (Bruce, Holt, Proehl, Hakim) and Steelers (Ward, Randle El, Miller, Wilson). You need lots of weapons, especially in the West Coast Offense. The 1989 49ers had 5 players that had at least 40 catches in their West Coast system and they are one of the greatest teams in the history of the NFL. The fact is that the Redskins, unlike most years, actually had a draft which has to mean something. You just assume that just because Cerrato and Snyder are running the show means that they can't do a good job. The Redskins had one of the 5 best drafts this year.
Kudos. You made me feel much better about it. I have to agree with you.

Other fans love to hate on the teams that do well at anything. The 'Skins had a productive draft. They address most of their needs with exception of a LB and a DT. I gave them a B.
Looking forward to training camp and the season. GO SKINS.

Wow! For getting the top two recievers in the draft, the starting tight end on one of the best offenses in College football, the Number one punter in the draft, 75% of his kicks in college were 50+ yards, a versatile offensive tackle and a couple of fill ins. I must say that I am very happy with the draft and have a good feeling that our recievers will fit perfect with Jim Zorns west coast offense. So I think that Cerato did very well and I am looking forward to see what this team does this year.
GO SKINS......

For all those who are doubting the Redskins D, wake up, they had many injuries last year and still finished with the 10th defense in the league, so this year with a couple of additions and healthy returns of starters we should be fine... so where is every one getting this info on such a bad d?

I dont know why the skins drafted Fred Davis instead of Calais Campbell (or another DE), but picking up 2 of the best WRs in this draft was brilliant. they are giving Jim Zorn everything he needs to succeed, and you have to give the front office credit for that. they must also have faith in Greg Blatche, because not drafting a defensive prospect until day 2 is very intriguing.

They added some solid players in thomas and kelly. If that was all i would have been ok with this draft. But Davis? i mean really? I love my skins but i just feel bad for that kid. Being an instant impact TE but playing behind a probowler in Chris Cooley.
No matter what the Davis pick makes little sense. If you give him the ball you're paying cooley too much. If you keep going to cooley constantly...which they should...then you wasted a pick that could have been used on a Quentin Groves or an Olineman, or a solid corner.
I understand not taking calais campell simply because Miami's Dline coach just came to the skins, and if he didn't lobby hard for us to take him than how good can he be?
I don't like the brennan pick at all, but I really don't like taking the punter while still having 3 picks left. everyone loves his foot....but wasn't he the only punter taken? meaning we could have waited til our last pick and gotten some other project.
and to the dude who said we're gonna be the laughing stock of the nfc east--- I assume you're not a Giants fan because they can't be that insecure right now...
so what does that make you? a Cowboys fan--the fans who haven't seen a playoff win since BEFORE clinton got reelected?
or an Eagles fan---the true laughing stock of the NFC east who haven't won a superbowl ever....not one...every SINGLE SEASON...ended in tears....nothing.....every year.....never won.....ever....just keep saying..."crap, maybe next year" or "hey, whatever, we won the nfc east a few years ago" or even "well at least we win the title for the most racist obnoxious COMPLETELY DELUSIONAL fans in the world every single year"

We nailed this draft. I would have gone for C. Campbell (DE) with our 2nd pick, but apperently the Skins didn't like him that much. So we get the #1 WR and another top 5 WR and The #1 TE in the second. I can totally live with that since all 3 will get catches in the West Coast Offense. All the while spreading out defenses to help Portis have a monster year. Davis can play FB too by the way. We got an awesome OT that will be training as a guard but could fill in at all 5 o-line spots when needed. We picked the best punter to be in the draft in years (even if we may have been able to get him a little later). This is an underraited help to any defense. We picked 2 CB's late that both have potential. Scooped up the Heisman 3rd place with Brennon who fits the offense and could slide into 2nd string in a year or 2. A DE that I don't know too much about except that he was a leader on his college team. And finally, with our last pick we got a S that probably has the best game intelligence in the draft AND sent 7 guys to the sideline for medical attention in his last 2 years at UCLA. Bad draft? Heck no! I'm surprised the haters are even talkig after we had one of the best drafts of all the teams and certainly the best draft the the Redskins have had in years and years.
B+, no question.

apologies up front, have posted this in another thread that's not getting traffic...
2-3 WR Thomas - great pick here. Best pick they made.
2-17 TE Davis - One of their 2 worst picks. Less than 6'3", 250, only average speed, won't break away from NFL OLBs or S. Would have been a good spot to look OL/DL or trade down. If they wanted TE, why not go low or UFA & take MD TE Haynos, a big TE?? Even running a 2-TE set, you don't go with this guy, you need block first-then release TE and Davis ain't gonna block. Should have taken Haynos late or UFA.
2-20 WR Kelly - good size, great hands, perfect red-zone target. Needs to decide if he wants to be like Monk or like Westbrook. May end up like McCants.
3-33 OT Rinehart - big, mobile guy. RT or G starter in the next 2 years I think. Good value here.
4-25 CB Tryon - this is a good cover guy who can sometimes wiff going for big hits. Sure he's short, so was D Green tho. Didn't hate this pick at this spot. May be a Smooty clone.
6-2 P Brooks - won the Ray Guy award for college punters, so I guess he's good. Maybe a tad high?? Frost is newly signed, this guy has a big leg but I read he's not a placement punter. Big legs aren't all you need in the N | |
