it was tragic to see a horse of that caliber go down.horse racing at premier tracks are far from cruel or in humane. most of these horses live better then most people in this country. i am sure eight bells lived a charmed 3 years til her sad death, to bad we can't say the same for the many dogs and cats around the country. Peta please focus on those animals who need help!!! horse racing although not perfect is a sport that most of the people connections  are horse lovers and the last thing they represent is cruelty. thoroughbreds are bred to run. they are happy when they are doing just that, just like a herding dogs loves to herd or a lab loves to retrieve. the sport is not cruel!!!

that said they could change the use of whipping, because it can make the animal expend itehmselves further then ithey should and that can lead to breakdowns.also change the surface of the tracks to the new poly surface.  THE JOCKEY WAS NOT AT FAULT<AND THAT IS WHY MOST PEOPLE CAN'T ALWAYS SUPPORT YOUR CAUSES. DONT BE COMPLETE IDIOTS FOR ALL THE  DOGS AND CATS SAKES.

HORSES WILL BE RUN AT 3 ,THAT WILL NOT CHANGE!! THE DERBY,PREAKNESS AND BELMONT ARE RESTRICTED TO 3 YEARS OLDS ONLY. THEY WILL NOT CHANGE THE SUPER BOWL OF HORSE RACING BECAUSE OF THIS.

THEY WILL NOT CHANGE THE SUPER BOWL OF HORSE RACING BECAUSE OF THIS.That's too bad since a horse isn't fully developed until they are 4.  Yes, these horses love to run and were bred to run, but not at 2 and 3 years old.  Yeah they run in the wild, but that is nothing like the strict training sessions that are forced upon them at an early age, you can't even compare that.  It's only common sense to change the age to 4, it will improve the PR of the sport.  They can say they "care" about the horses all they want, but it takes actions to prove it.

i am sure eight bells lived a charmed 3 years til her sad deathAnyone else see the absurdity of that statement?  Gee she had a great life, too bad it had to end 17 years early because of the demands put upon her body!  Unbelievable.

This shouldn't come to a surprise to anyone that PETA is calling for the Eight Belles' jockey to be suspended.  Look at the facts and you will see that PETA has no ground to stand on.

"2,981. That’s how many dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and other "companion animals" died needlessly at PETA's hands in 2006.  While PETA collects millions in donations by pretending to advocate for the welfare of animals, the group has euthanized 17,400 pets since 1998."  Source - http://www.petakillsanimals.com/petasdirtysecret.cfm

Ridiculous!

PETA  are a bunch of D-Bags...........they need to get a life nd stop trying to ruin everyone else's.

Pathetic Egotistical Two-faced A$$holes

theres no way that Gabe is going to get suspended...and her ears were pricked nd she was happy as can be when she crossed the finish line...peta needs to learn the traits of racehorses before they make outlandish comments nd send rediculous letters to CD and call the jocks room @ Deleware Park....

there jus pissed cas no one likes them..

also...he definitley did not feel anything funny with the filly until after the race..she started galloping out awkwardly, and he pulled her up..and unfortunatley, he ankles snapped, broke the skin, and she was in unbearable pain. peta needs to undertstand that these horses are bred to run, and they love to run...and htey can try to ban whips, but if the jockey didnt have the whip, she would have crashed into the rail...thats basically what they use them for...they use them to direct green horses who like to veer in and out of the stretch...the whip doesnt hurt them...the horses respond to the sound of the crack..i do have to say though...people do breed these thoroughbreds for speed and class, not stability and strength..and unbridled's song was notorious for having feet problems...even on the day of his derby where he finished 5th as the favorite..he had different shoes on...and northern dancer whos in her bloodlines, also had leg problems in his lifetime.

Concerning the question on the difference of TB s and Arabs tails during racing has several replys that may help. The tail action is related to the horse rear tail bone speed/movement of the strides of the breeds. ThB trainers often train horses tying tails down for more speed as harness drivers also do. The tail acts as a friction if its extended upwards or begins swishing action. If a horse swishes this not only will slow his speed but also takes his mind off the running and back to his rear which distracts them. An Arab though slower in times, has a shorter quicker rear bone movements thus this will keep tail upwards simply from the bone/muscle action. The arab being smaller and more narrow frontal areas(head etc) uses his tail for aerodynamics. The TB has huge head and front chest areas and needs no further help at rear. No ballance would be needed also for the TB because his heavier weight is distributed evenly thru a larger body(ht.girth). Generally if you watch TB s down the stretch, they are slowing down and tail drops straight down also because the rear hinds are not working as hard thru lost stamina. At beginning of races they are traveling bit faster and tails are bouncing upwards. We are talking about race horses and not the average weekend rides of course of pet owners.
