I have been a Lions fan for 36 years, and I believe I might have the answer to the Lions problems on offense. Drew Stanton should be the starter now that the knee is healed up and he mobile, the most mobile of the quarterbacks on our roster. See now he is able to move like the qb of this team will have to because of this o-line with all the holes in it. If the oline has the same amount of holes as last season then Stanton is only one that could outrun defenders to get the ball to our two star recievers.
PLEASE MAKE THE QB POSISTION OPEN FOR COMPETITION RATHER THAN THROWING IN THE OLDEST ONE WE CAN MUSTER

I don`t mind Jon Kitna but I would like to see Drew Stanton beat him out for the starting job, its still up in the air.

Sammy I have to diagree with this assesment. Drew Stanton has yet to prove himself and I think throwing him in there would be a mistake and I'll tell you why.
1. I don't think the O-Line is going to be as bad as it was in the 2 years past. Martz's system put alot of pressure on the O-line and as a result the Line gave up too many sacks.
2. The Lions plan on using a more Run balanced offense which should greatly decrease the amount of sacks they are giving up just based on the fact that they're actually trying to run, use the clock, and keep the ball out of the air.
3. Gosder Cherilus should add to the O-line and add more power to solidfy the right side. The right side stuggled last year based on performance AND lack of consistency. Let's hope Cherilus adds consistency for the next 10 years.
4. The zone blocking scheme that is being implemented should fit our quicker, more mobile O-line that the scheme calls for. Our O-line is almost perfect for this system and we have 2-3 guys who have ran it before. This should make for a more consistent unit.
5. Jon Kitna deserves to be starting QB with the beating he's taken over the last 2 years. If the Line plays up to par and protects him longer, it should give him the chance to make more plays...or mistakes. I think that Kitna does make too many mistakes but when you're being blitzed EVERY play, any QB would make more mistakes under that duress.
I really think that Kitna should be the starter and until the team proves it can protect him long enough to give him a real chance to be successful then a youngster like Stanton should be protected on the bench. Let Kitna be the crash test dummy.
Kitna's the wise old vet and I think he's really deserving of the spot until someone can out play him and I don't really think Stanton's at that spot yet, remember Stanton is basically still a rookie. Kitna is too smart to get beat out at this point in his career, Stanton is too inexperienced.
If anything I would assume Dan Orvlosky would get a shot before Stanton.

"Crash test dummy" LOL
I gotta tell ya, that made me smile and then cringe! Listen, you know what you're talking about when it comes to the current state of the Lions, I'll give ya that one, but the oline is the question and considering that Kitna, the last 2 seasons, was on his back more than Madonna during the Like a Virgin tour I think that he is just a " crash test dummy" It's enevetable that he either be ineffective or injured and then after he is unable to play because of a concussion or what have you, Stanton comes in and saves the day! I'm telling you this kid is gonna be the new and improved Vick of the league w/o the dogfighting! Good response tho, you got skills!

The coaching staff is feeling heat. They are going with Kitna a proven commodity to save their jobs. Stanton who is my choice will commit rookie mistakes and cost some ganmes. I still think we need to see what he brings to the table before next year, but the fact remains Millen and Marinelli are looking to save their jobs.

Sammy,
We don't want to ruin Stanton. I think he is stronger mentally than Joey Harrington was but still it's not hard to ruin a kid QB when you throw him to the Lions' (O-line)!!!! Our line should be able to give Kitna more protection and we have to let Stanton grow and learn before he gets his shot. Unless of course he gets to camp and is so good that coach HAS to play him!!!! the job has to be Kinta's until Stanton (or Orlovsky) can take it.

I read somewhere that Coletto has no favored QB and there will be open competition for the starting job the only position that is locked is the #1 and 2 reciever which we all know who those 2 are

I went to State when he did and watched him bull people over on special teams and deal out hits on offense.... also he has ability to outrun the defense and a bullet arm with good accuracy...The guy is hardnosed stud...One thing I did always notice about him thou is his lackluster performance in the 4th quarter.. he does get rattled relatively easy..so I can see bringing him along to fast as a concern

Jon Kitna will be the Lions quarterback this season, unless something catastrophic happens or Drew Stanton just totally impresses everyone in camp and gives Coach Marinelli no other choice but to play him. Its hard to win with a first-year QB and that is what Drew will be, he hasnt seen the Lions practice field yet. Jon Kitna should be given a chance to show what he can do with a more balanced offense and a legitimate running game.

Sammy, JK should get the start for the season but if he cant't get it done then we see what we have in the other guys for next year... Kitna should get the shot though!

I actually like Kitna! He is confident and a good leader.... He moves the balll well consistantly (4000+ past 2 year) and takes a licken and keeps coming back for more! My only knock is he throws alot of picks... If he could bump his TD's up some and knock the INT's down a few then what more could you ask for in a QB?

Are the Lions going to the Super Bowl? NO
Are the Lions making the playoffs....I doubt it.
Why not make a move for the future? Kitna is the man until the bye week, then see what Stanton and Orvlosky has. We will probably be just good eneough to keep fans involved, and Kitna will be resigned. Start new and see what happens. It will payoff in the long run.
