RR Has handed the "#1" Jersey to a DEFENSIVE BACK, worse than that a FRESHMAN !!! Braylon Edwards has already stated his anger with this move and who better to know the meaning of the #1 jersey than Edwards.
Maize---AMEN!!! The #1 jersey has always been worn by the go to receiver at Michigan. From AC to Braylon to...John Kolesar, that was the guy you always knew could break open the game.

calm down everyone.
(from rivals) First, a note on the No. 1 ‘controversy.’ Sources inside Schembechler Hall say former U-M receiver Braylon Edwards is NOT upset with the new coaching staff about the use of his No. 1, in large part because numbers aren’t even officially issued until August and nothing has been set in stone. They have been in touch with Edwards, and he has had nothing but positive things to say about Rich Rodriguez and the new staff.
i predict that Braylon and other alumni will have a talk with JT Floyd and another number will be used. as Brian from mgoblog said:
"It's just going to look wrong for the #1 to be on defense. I'm already freaked out that Charles Woodson is going to be a white tailback for the next four years. This is too much. I might die. [probably not, though -ed] Hell, I'm all for more number specialization: tiny waterbug receivers get Desmond Howard's #21. Dann O'Neill gets Jake Long's 77. Whoever's small and slow and inexplicably awesome gets #20."
all i know is that RR really likes Floyd and often name checked him during recruiting. i'm sure that Edwards and RR have talked since the ESPN interview and the issue will be(has been) resolved.

I find it interesting that so many non-Michigan fans are concerned about this alleged attack upon a Michigan tradition when there is debate among the Michigan faithful as to whether or not it is a "tradition" at all. There have been some great receivers to wear #1 (AC, Braylon, etc.) and there have been some downright mediocre players to wear it. There have also been some #1 receivers (Manningham, etc.) that did not wear the number. I hardly think that it is time for Michigan fans to commit hara kiri over this.
The only reason that this is even getting pub is that it is the CFB offseason and people are jonesing for some CFB news. It is chic to pile on Michigan right now, so anytime anything happens people can say "Oh, the humanity! RR makes his players run! This is the end of Michigan!" I think you people need to switch to decaf.
After years of watching Lloyd try to run out the clock with a 3 point lead going into the second half, and watching every offensive series consist of "zone left, zone left, incomplete, punt," I am ready to accept some changes. There is plenty of tradition at Michigan, but the one tradition that RR seems to understand it is having a strong work ethic and winning. So yeah, if our coach has to be a bit of a dick sometimes, I am not too worried.
BTW, when I hear Buckeye fans talk about being concerned about the changes at Michigan, it sounds to me like they are more concerned about a change in the win/loss ratio in the Game. "Protecting Michigan tradition" from a Buckeye sounds more like "keep on losing."
They will probably assign the #1 to a receiver, but mostly to keep Braylon happy so he keeps sending those $500K checks. Aside from that, I think that Michigan's traditions will continue despite RR's presence.

Thanks for sharing, el Tigre. You may want to check out the early rankings before spouting too much.

The Tigers' only hope is a road win at Gainsville and a miracle against the Dawgs.

Don't mess with tradition. The BCS should listen loud and clear.

Even Jim Rome takes his shot at RR breaking tradition. Here is the link.

No, the #1 won't win or lose games, BUT neither does the Fans cheering in front of the TV, Winged Helmet, The Victors, or even the Big House. If ANY of these were changed TRUE Michigan fans would be in an uproar.
This number means a lot ! Manningham didn't get it because he was a Pot Smoking Off- field trouble. That part of the Honor. I don't recall a so-so WR wearing it since AC. Most turned So-So in the pro's ,but while wearing the #1 at Michigan they shined.
In the end this will be resolved and NOONE will wear it this year, but soon, very soon, one of these talented recievers will get to dawn it. Let the competition for it begin. Front-runner is whoever catches the most TD's against OSU this year.

Mr. Maizenblue, if this is the first thing that Rich Rod has done that pushed your buttons, I think you need read a little more. I am not trying to be confrontational at all. I know a lot of Michigan alums (including three former players, two recent, and one not so recent), and to a man, they all have been embarrassed by the way RR has handled himself and the team since his started talking to UM.
But beyond that, great post. Five stars. Six I if they had them. That is the type of post I love to hear although I must say, I thought it was very sad. College football is built on tradition. Without it, it is nothing.
