I disagree. Why toy with the kids confidence. He hit .362 down there last year. He is gonna have to work this out up here while the team is winning ball games. We could quickly mess this up like we did Patterson. IF we were 15-23 I would say bring on the changes but we aren't! It would make more sense to bring in Lofton to play at the top of the order than Edmonds who is nothing more than a 7 or 8 hitter now & DeRosa has been just fie in that slot!

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines as you will i am, but......
they aren't playing him (Pie) up here, so its hard to work it out when he plays once every three days. Its a tough balance. On one hand, it could stunt his growth sending him down (even more than they already have), but not playing is stunting his growth too.
I'm going with the "he's better off playing every day" mentality I guess. but I definately understand your reasoning.

The way that the Chicago Sun-Times reports on this subject makes it sound as if it is a done deal once the Wednesday waiver expires making him a free agent.
I guess the prospect of a veteran left handed bat off the bench (can't see him getting a lot of leather time in CF) at the bargain basement price of the pro-rated veteran's minimum salary makes him too good a value to pick up for a look see.
Petco is not hitter friendly whereas Wrigley can be much more so, perhaps a change of scenery will help Jim Edmonds get a measure of revenge on the Cardinals AND propel the Cubs into the playoffs and potentially the World Series.

Anything other than signing him to the league minimum would be a big mistake.
At league minimum, it is worth a gamble.
A gamble I dont think will pan out, but low risk.

well it looks more and more like this is going to happen, but where does he fit in this lineup?
7th or 8th possibly?

The Cubs need a left-handed power bat to break up Lee and Ramirez, or that's what I assume will happen. As stated earlier, I'm not a big of the transaction, but I also wasn't a big fan of moving Dempster to the starting rotation. I don't know about this pick-up; I prefer to see Pie make the adjustment at the Major League level than being sent to Iowa. Edmonds wasn't playing that great of defense in PetCo, but his offensive number were slightly better on the road.

I'm pretty sure that if the Cubs sign Jim Edmonds, he's going to bat either 5th or 6th in the lineup, Fukudome will move up to 2nd in the order, and Theriot will drop to 8th. If he can produce, which I doubt but a lot of Major Leaguers (Greg Maddux, several members of the Cardinals) think he can, then this could be a good signing. He would likely cost us the pro-rated minimum salary of $280,000. Financially, it's worth the risk, but the question is, "How many more games will we win or lose because Edmonds is in the lineup?"

I am actually OK with this for a lot of the reasons outlined by JO74. He will cost us nothing, we can use Reed Johnson in the role for which he was signed, which is as a versatile fourth-outfielder and CF platoon. Edmonds cannot defend as well as he once could, that's understandable. However, he still gets great jumps and can still throw. Also, understand that this guy is a bad fit in Petco, which has one of the two or three biggest outfields in baseball and that is a huge responsibility for an aging CF. Wrigley's CF is much cozier, and he's not asked to do this every day. He can still hit right-handed pitching, and he knows the league. I don't know how much of a cancer he is, I've heard different things, but nothing worse than him being really cocky. On a team with strong leaders (this is Big Z and Derrek's team) I cannot see him coming in and being anything more than a role player with hopefully, a role player's ego. I realize that when you lose your job to Jody Gerut, you're not that good, but just being able to bat him seventh, give Johnson days off against some tougher right-handers, and be able to still get some balls out of Wrigley is good. When the weather warms up I think his bat will too. Plus, Edmonds walks a bit still and he knows the strike zone. Pie definitely needs to be playing every day and right now, he is not an option as a pinch-hitter. Would you rather see Jim Edmonds coming off the bench to pinch-hit late in a game or Felix Pie? If that is essentially what he is being signed to do, I choose Edmonds. When Pie can gain some confidence and success with his new swing / approach, you can bring him up when he is ready to start and play everyday, and use Johnson as a true fourth outfielder.
