There were so many people the last few years that said Jacob Hester won't amount to much. Last year he proved to be one of the most versatile and vital parts of the LSU offense and people still doubted him. Then there were those that said he won't go very high in the draft if he's drafted at all, he went in the 3rd round. Finally there were those that said he will most likely never see the field and if he does it will be very limited. Well!!! -
General Manager A.J. Smith says that he has been targeting Hester as the primary backup for LaDainian Tomlinson since seeing him back at LSU in November. The Chargers wanted Hester so badly that they traded a 2009 second-round draft pick along with a fifth-rounder this year for the right to select Hester in the third round on Sunday. He is being described as strong and deceptively quick, and appears to be the overwhelming favorite to replace Michael Turner, who departed in free agency this offseason.
From this weekend -
Jacob Hester may have been the busiest Charger of them all. Norv Turner has wasted no time in introducing Hester to first unit responsibilities for both the halfback AND fullback positions. The rookie 3rd round pick from LSU was seen lining up not only in the backfield, but split out as a receiver, and as an in-line blocker on the tight end's flank. He's an amazingly versatile player, and Norv is evidently determined to capitalize on that.
So the next time you are about to write a post about how Tim Tebow or some other player you THINK won't make it in the NFL.......Remember Hester.

Hester plays with heart and intensity. He's a model football player. Regardless of how he does in the pros, he's already proven the doubters wrong by what he accomplished at LSU.

I agree, KNUT and JAG. While the NFL primarily views ones value to the team in statistics and production, no one can properly weigh the heart it takes to be a player. Hester is the epitome of a team player. To the hell with the critics.

I like Hester and I hoping he does well, but... it is OTAs and everyone looks good. This is a great time of the year for these camps because it put the NFL back in the media and on the thought of the fans minds. I can't comment on how the Chargers do things, but the Titan rookies haven't stepped on the field with the veterans. Even here there is a quite buzz about Chris Johnson and his blazing speed. Now lets see how he does versus Kyle Vandenbosch.

Actually KNUT he's proving ME right. I (a Buckeye fan) tried to tell Roy (an LSU fan) that Hester would be a 3rd round pick back in January in my thread, "Give me your team's NFL prospects for this draft. Roy listed the LSU players and said the following:
Jacob Hester - I love this guy and nothing would make me happier to see him go to a team who will utilize his skills as a powerful inside runner! 5th Round. Roy (LSU Fan)
Note his ranking of being a FIFTH rounder. AAMonte (a Michigan fan) responds by saying:
I would see Hester going in the 2nd or 3rd round or even a late first round surprise pick. Why so low?? (AAMonte UM Fan)
To which Roy (LSU fan) says:
No chance for 1st or 2nd. I would love to see it but don't see anyone who would draft him that high. Maybe a 4th rounder but I can't see him going any earlier. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? Why do you think so high Roy (LSU Fan)
Then Buckeye Todd (AKA "The Swami") comes in with PINPOINT accuracy and says:
I'm thinking 3rd actually. I just think he's a winner. He's really versatile. Look at Brian Leonard from Rutgers who went in the 2nd round last year. -Buckeye Todd (OSU Fan)
Then you have msanch79 who I would assume in an LSU fan since his home town is listed as Kenner, LA who says this about Hester:
Lacks the speed for an NFL runner. Lacks the size for a fullback and/or TE. He will be a project for any team that drafts him; therefore, I agree that he will be an early 2nd day pick (or 3rd day if they make the 1st rounder on friday). msanch79 (LSU Fan)
Then of course Buckeye Todd has to set yet another LSU fan straight on their own player:
Lacks the speed for an NFL runner. Lacks the size for a fullback and/or TE. He will be a project for any team that drafts him; msanch79
Here's where I have a MAJOR disagreement. Look at the player profiles for the following two players:
Brian Leonard Ht: 6-1.5 Wt: 226 40: 4.54
Jacob Hester Ht: 6-0 Wt: 225 40: 4.55
They are almost identical. Both are very versatile players who can do almost anything you ask them to do. Brian Leonard was drafted in the 2nd round by a team that already has a stud RB.
Guys with a great work ethic that are really versatile like Leonard and Hester will play at the next level. Teams will use them at RB, FB, H-Back, in the Slot. They don't fit the mold of any one thing, but they can do a lot of things well. It creates mismatches.
Neither guy has blazing 4.3 speed, but neither are slugs either. Neither guy is a 245lb bruiser, but neither is "small" per se, and both are very tough. Both have good hands as well. -Buckeye Todd
therefore, I agree that he will be an early 2nd day pick (or 3rd day if they make the 1st rounder on friday). msanch79
Well "2nd day" is the third round now, so if he goes in the third as I have him projected to go it will be "early 2nd day". They are changing the draft this year to have 1st and 2nd rounds on Saturday at 3pm, and 3-7 on Sunday.
The only thing dropping Hester into the 3rd or 4th round is this being an extremely deep RB class. I still think his diversity will land him on a team looking for a RB, FB, H-back, slot, type of guy to get 8 touches a game, and some goal line carries. -Buckeye Todd
Todd, I still say I will be amazed but very happy if Hester goes in the 3rd round. I stick to 4th round. We will have to pull this thread out of the ashes after the draft and see how everyone did! -Roy
There were at least two more LSU fans in that thread who list the LSU players they think will be drafted like Dorsey, Doucet, Steltz, and THEY DIDN'T EVEN LIST HESTER AS GETTING DRAFTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So with all due respect my good friend KNUT, you had at least two Big Ten fans, including myself, who were right, and it seems like the doubters were the LSU fans...
To which Roy again replies:

OK, thanks CBS for screwing up how that was supposed to look at the end. Not cool man.
I think I listed who said what next to the original posts though so you get the point.

I enjoyed watching him play at LSU. I'd love to see a throwback guy like Hester make it in the NFL. And, hey, playing behind LT can't hurt... maybe he'll get the Wes Welker bump.

I'm sure he'll get alot of short yardage carries. He can definetely get you that one yard when you need it, which unfortunately he proved to Florida's defense about 3 times in a row on 4th down. He may even be able to take Miachael Turners spot as the #2 back in San Diego. He's a tough, physical runner which could compliment LT's finesse style.

That doesn't surprise me either KNUT. As has been already pointed out he has a lot of versatility, but he also has something that is intangible and hard to measure, toughness. That guy is not afraid to hit anyone and seems to love the contact. Like Howlongsitbeen said he is a throwback runner, a Larry Csonka with better moves and more speed, would love to see him make it on the next level.

Playing behind LT is a great way to start in the NFL. I'd expect a few goal line plunges and a few late game carries against tired defenses. Given his hard running style, it should be a nice opportunity to put up decent numbers.

BTW, not trying to be an ass, but Michael Turner is on the Falcons now... but yes I agree wit hyour post great short down back and seemd to be big enough to be a serviceable blocker also... I like this kid a lot... proved a lot to me in the title game

Yeah I know he's on the Falcons now. What I meant was now that Turner is gone he'll have an oppurtunity to maybe take that #2 RB spot. LOL

Jacob Hester is a football player and I mean that as a compliment. I think I'm stealing that from John Madden or one of the TV guys who describes a "football player" as a guy who busts his butt every play. He just shows up, does his job, and plays football. Oh yeah, and he's pretty doggone good too. I've always liked Jacob Hester. Les Miles isn't stupid. There is a reason why Hester played so much when some of you keep talking about these awesome RBs LSU still has. The guy can play.

Here's where I started:
Jacob Hester - I love this guy and nothing would make me happier to see him go to a team who will utilize his skills as a powerful inside runner! 5th Round. Then I raised to a 4th rounder after some good arguments. I asked for opinions....damn
No chance for 1st or 2nd. I would love to see it but don't see anyone who would draft him that high. Maybe a 4th rounder but I can't see him going any earlier. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? Why do you think so high RoyAnd here is where I finished up. I don't feel bad or feel like I didn't give Hester any respect. I am very happy for him as I said in my first quote there. I wanted him to go to a good team and he went to a potential Super Bowl contender. And he went 1 round higher than I thought he would. Geez, I guess I suck!
Todd, I still say I will be amazed but very happy if Hester goes in the 3rd round. I stick to 4th round. We will have to pull this thread out of the ashes after the draft and see how everyone did! So here we are and I am damn happy for that damn fine football player
