I do not understand the logic that because she ran second it was safe to race her there - if you have 2 airplanes that are racing, and you are going so fast accross the finish line your wings fall off, I can hardly say your airplane should be racing in that race.
I spoke to Todd's assistant about Rags - no one is denying that a classic race is a tall order for a filly, but they said Rags was completely different to every filly they had (and it is not like their barn was lacking of good fillies). He said she did everything like the colts, and trained with them from early on so it when the idea came up it was not that far-fetched, and she was lightly raced. Of course they too paid a price for that race, but theirs did not put racing in a bad light, nor cost the horse it's life.
