I really enjoyed watching Curtis Whitley play for the Panthers that first year...he played hard and I respected that. Second year it all kind of fell apart.

Yesterday, I was listening to local sports talk on the radio here in Charlotte. Once a week, former Panthers offensive lineman Frank Garcia is a studio guest. He was drafted in 1995 and was a good friend of Curtis Whitley. He told a story on air, and I figured I'd pass it on:

"Curtis was a wild one. I remember my rookie year, we met in the weight room with strength and conditioning coach Chip Morton. Chip had worked out recently with Junior Seau of the Chargers and was enamored with him. ' Oh man - Junior this and Junior that'. Curtis lit up a cigarette, actually inhaled a couple of puffs, then proceeded to bench press 225 lbs. 35 straight times. 'Let's see Junior do that' he said to Chip, and with a big grin - walked away. "

Frank hinted that he knew of Whitley's demons - mostly the drug problems that plagued his life. I think he had a couple of daughters left behind. What a shame, eh ?

It is a shame Rob, to have life taken away at such a young age and leave children behind.  Anytime the Panther family is disrupted, I feel it affects us all.  Our prayers and with his family and rest in peace, Curtis.

Go Panthers !!!

Hey Tom, he died in your neck of the woods. Any recent word on what the cause of death was ? All I've heard today is "that foul play has been ruled out" - which doesn't tell us much.
