Nice try Indiana, but self-imposed sanctions don't fly, regardless of their severity. You will take what the NCAA gives you, and you will like it.

They should get nothing and like it. How does Sampson get off with his 750K? What a huge mistake hiring that bum in the first place, they knew he was a cheat and a liar.

Maybe IU should get more sanctions just for being stupid....and dump the AD while you're at it.

Indiana should never have hired this stooge in the first place and they will pay for it in spades. This self imposed sanction is not nearly enough to compensate for the repeat violator status Indiana risked by hiring this clown. I expect the NCAA to level even more sanctions on Indiana and it wont be pretty. The people who where involved in hiring the cheater should also be canned asap. They are as much responsible for creating this situation at Indiana as anyone.

The main offender in hiring Sampson is gone...the former University President Herbert.  He refuses to comment on this situation...big surprise.  Greenspan wilted and gave in to him as he 'pushed' hard to get Sampson hired.  IU will probably get more sanctions, but it may not be as bad as many think.

If everyone wants to give IU these hard core sancations what should the NCAA do with USC and OJ Mayo if the allegations turn up to be true?  Sampson made impermissible phone calls he didn't pay anyone to play.  I am not trying to defend Sampson he cheated and there should be punishment on IU for hiring the known cheater, but I don't think that the book needs to be thrown at them.  Right now the NCAA needs to really look into whats going on at USC with what happened with Bush while he was there and what's going on with Mayo.

The Hoosiers will get more sanctions from the NCAA police.  They may not be much more, but there will be additional sanctions.  I can't believe Indiana hired Sampson in the first place.  They can pretty much have anyone they want and they go out and hire a dirty recruiter.  The program will survive and even thrive again in coming years, but the next couple of years are going to be miserable for IU basketball supporters.

I honestly do not think IU will get many more sanctions.  While I don't like Sampson, what he did by the phone calls has damaged IU far more than anyone else.  Even if through the phone calls he got some more recruits, IU lost all of their main recruits when he left, so not only have they been harmed by the self imposed sanctions which keep them from getting as many recruits as usual, they lost all the recruits he could have got through the phone calls and much more.  It seems to me that ought to be sufficiant.  IU has never reaped whatever benefits may have come from his cheating, and they have been harmed a great  deal.

Loss of a scholarship, loss of off-campus recruiting for Crean, loss of the majority of returning starters.... Our returning starters and their numbers:

  • Jordan Crawford: 10.0 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.2 apg
  • Brandon McGee: 1.6 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 0.1 apg
  • Kyle Taber: 1.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 0.2 apg
  • Brett Finkelmeier: 0.3 ppg, 0.0 rpg, 0.0 apg
Totals: 13.1 ppg / 7.1 rpg / 2.5 apg (Indiana averaged 75.1 ppg last season)

I think the message has been sent and received..... I look for NO more further sanctions since they ridded themselves of the "Cancer" of Cellvin Sanctions oh so quickly. It's just too bad he got away with some loot.

Criminals don't dictate their punishment to the state. IU doesn't get to dictate their sanctions to the NCAA.

if USC has not received the death penalty in Football then IU will get nothing.  USC is cheating worse than SMU in the mid 80's.

Colsprts - I agree that USC's infractions are pretty bad.  But this article is about IU.  I agree with the previous post - the criminal does not get to set his own sentence.
