It hasn't hit the official transactions listings yet, but the Falcons have just released safety prospect C.J. Gaddis.    Gaddis was on the practice squad last season and was a long shot to make the roster.

The extra roster spot might give the team room to bring one of the non-roster guys at minicamp in for OTAs and training camp.   By my count, the team has 76 players under contract and 11 drafted players to sign.   As the draft picks start signing their contracts, the team will need to release other players to remain under the 80-man roster limit.   But at least for now there should be room to bring a few of the non-roster guys or sign a few more free agent prospects for OTAs.

Other notes:    the AJC reported today that Todd Weiner is ahead of schedule on his rehab and may start running next week.

I've seen a few articles now that have said that Sam Baker and Pat McCoy are the two candidates for the left tackle job.   It's usually overlooked, but Weiner is also capable of playing left tackle.  In fact, he had switched from RT to LT just before he went on IR last season.   He has played RT since arriving in Atlanta, but that's not because he isn't good enough to be trusted on the left side.  It's because we had a left-handed quarterback, so his pass blocking skills were needed on the right side.

Those pieces (at least one was D. Orlando Ledbetter) also failed to mention Quinn Ojinnaka and Renardo Foster, who are both still with the team and both started games at the left tackle spot last season.   (Foster is still out doing physical rehab.)   They both played better than the original starter, Wayne Gandy.   Terrance Pennington and Harvey Dahl are still with the team as well.  So while Baker may be the obvious frontrunner for the LT job, there are quite a few other candidates besides Pat McCoy competing for the job.

The AJC also said DJ Shockley did not participate in any of the team drills in minicamp as he continues his rehab.  That's technically correct but misleading -   he did participate in minicamp.   He just wasn't involved in the 11-on-11 session at the end of practice.   He did take part in the coverage drills, throwing to the TEs and RBs as they were covered by the linebackers.

Finneran did participate in the practice session that I saw, but he wasn't able to participate in the Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning sessions.   He still isn't back to full speed by any stretch of the imagination.

I wonder if perhaps there are sources within the coaching staff or the organization who are saying that the left-tackle position is between Sam Baker and Pat McCoy. I guess time will tell.

I didn't find the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's comment about D.J. Shockley not participating in "team drills" during the Falcons' mini-camp to be misleading at all. In my mind, "team drills" are 11 vs. 11.

I'd really like to see D.J. Shockley make the team over Joey Harrington but I doubt he will. The reason being is because Harrington is really the only true veteran we have at that position and being a former number 3 overall pick he could lend some helpful advice to Matt Ryan when things doesn't go so well. There is no doubt that Harrington can help with Ryans development from a mental standpoint.

I would say Harrington has the edge do to him starting last year for us, but I think DJ has the edge when it comes to better talent. We need a variety of styles at the QB spot so encase somebody goes down, and DJ has to come in, it would be a lot harder for the opposing D to tune in on him right away. He just needs to get healthy at this point in time though.

Also I don't know about you guys but we have a HUGE O-line. I didn't realize how many guys we had over 6'5 330 pounds. I knew about Terrence Pennington, but thats about it. I know it don't mean a whole lot when it comes to ability, but it gives us some great depth that a lot of people don't realize. So if a starter goes down and one of the big guys come in, at least he could do a decent job for the time being on the running game.

I don't know if having Joey will help him or hurt him. I mean think about it. Do you want the guy who hasn't had ANY success to lead and teach our new up and coming, highly paid rookie QB. I mean seriously, Chris Redman has less experience but the same amount of if not more success experience than Joey. There is no doubt that some will have to be learned from some other source than Redman seeing he hasn't been a Franchise starting QB in his past but I don't think Joey can really help. What if Joey teaches him to hold on to the ball longer than need be? I think I would be more comfortable with Redman/Ryan-QB1 and then Shockley at QB3. Bill Musgrave can teach Ryan and maybe Ryan can build a relationship with retired vet and learn from him. Maybe Blank and Thomas can look into hiring Steve Young as a special trainer of some sorts.
