I like the idea, it helps the Big East and Conference USA. Plus it gives Memphis a chance to show all of their haters out there that they're a really good program.

So you're saying Georgetown, Marquette, St. Johns, Seton Hall and Villanova would all be removed from the Big East. That would ruin our conference. It would take away the Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry and take away a couple of those historic schools by the name of St. Johns and Seton Hall. That wouldn't be a good move, but I still respect your input.

You're looking at it from a basketball perspective.  The football schools can't wait to get rid of the perceived dead weight you just mentioned.  Louisville, South Florida, and Rutgers couldn't care less about Georgetown-Syracuse in basketball.  They're anxious for better bowl ties-in.

2010 season, ND joins Big 10, Memphis joins Big East.  Thats all.  Its big enough, but its not going anywhere from there, unless the Big East decides to take ECU up on its offer as a football only member, where the offer will stand until its accepted.

Villanova thought about the jump to 1-A years ago (when their AA football team was consistently good) - but their football stadium isn't big enough to fit Big East requirements - and is in a neighborhood with zoning laws so it can't get any bigger (hence the small basketball pavilion as well)

The only option would be to rent the big stadiums downtown - and look how well that worked out for Temple.  Philly isn't a college football town.

I am all for adding Memphis into the mix. I don't know about their fball program, but they certainly have a bball program that can stand the heat in the Big East.

As far as dropping Georgetown, that's crazy talk! No way would the BE let Georgetown, Syracuse, or Uconn go. Why mess with bball to fix fball when you can work to improve both? The Syracuse/ Georgetown rivalry is one of the longest and best in college hoops. I have to think that the BE will not part with those teams and are unlikely to part with Seton Hall, Nova, St. John's, or Pitt. I say get rid of Depaul.

This would be like a second christmas!  However, you know this has happened before.  I refuse to get my hopes up this time.  I think it would be an outstanding move for the school.  Coach Cal will hate it, he always wanted to be the big fish in the little pond.  But it also would be great to get to resume the Louisville games again.  As much as I hate those Cardinals, I miss playin' them.  What really suprises me is 2 of the area's better sportswriters (Gary Parrish and Geoff Calkins) are mum on the word about it.  A few months ago, during the schools feasibilty study of a new stadium, I called in to their radio show to respond to their question of whether or not the UofM shoud build an on campus football stadium.  I said R.C. Johnson really screwed the university a few years ago with his half-hearted attempt to get the Tigers into the Big-East.  I also said there was no need to build a new stadium, unless the school is going to get into a BCS conference.

And now this, WOW, maybe the AD was listening!  I know, I know; not to me but to the desires of the alumni, boosters, students.  Maybe he was finally fed up with only getting small school money.  Maybe the B.E. finally saw that Memphis Basketball is relevant and dominant.  Who knows, who cares.  The point is- will this be good for both parties involved?  Yes, it will bring some legitimacy to the UofM football team (should aid in recruiting) and will bring added dominance to B.E. basketball, making it hands down the best conf. in the nation.

And here's the bonus question.  With all of this going on, is Coach Cal still going to hire away either assistant from Pitt (Orlando Antigua) or Georgetown (David Cox)?

Mikesyr17, Willroast,

Listen, I understand your reaction; I'm a Hoya.  But as politely as I can say this... you don't know what you're talking about.  College basketball doesn't bring in the revenue of college football, so it will be the football schools--not the basketball ones--in the driver's seat for any realignment.

Louisville, South Florida, Rutgers, et al could honestly care less about Boeheim-Thompson.  They want the multi-million dollar windfalls that better bowl ties-in create, and right now, because the Big East is perceived to be a junior varsity football conference, the football schools are itching to figure out how to expand.

It's going to happen.  We (non-football schools) are inevitably going to get dropped.  It's only a matter of when it happens and where we all land.
