"He's a talented guy. But quarterback takes a lot of things. If you just said, height, weight, speed, arm strength, Alex would be the guy. But there is so much more than that. Tom Brady doesn't measure up to some guys." -- Nolan on 49ers quarterback Alex Smith.
The same thing could be said about Nolan:
"He's a talented guy. But Head Coach takes a lot of tings. If you just said, experience at coordinator level, inspirational speech, work ethics, Nolan would be the guy. But there is so much more than that. Bill Walsh doesn't measure up to some guys. --Bruyant on 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan.
This guys surely talks like a great coach, but after 3 years of his performance, I am starting to wonder if he's the right guy to lead us. What grade would you give to Nolan up to this pt?

I would give him an A for improving, Because he is for sure improving our talent level, since he's gotten here, the only mistake he has made is drafting Alex Smith overall, but that could still be an upgrade, depending on what he does this year under a brand Corvette for an offensive coordinator ( Mike Martz ) that is.

I Voted not approving, but its by a very slim margin. If you look at what the man had to start with there are many things that are better about the team. We have alot more talent on both sides of the ball, the salary cap is healthy, we are considered by most to be on the rise as apposed to headed downhill. But the results on the field just arent there, the record isnt improving, the stats arent going up, and alot of this can be conributed to poor talent management. The man seems to know a good player when he sees one but is incapable of using that player to their highest potential, weather it be a 4-3 guy in the 3-4, a shotgun/bootleg qb forced into a pocket passer, a DE as OLB he is always trying to pound square pegs into round holes. He also makes alot of game time mistakes in play calling. Yes there are some excuses for some of this, but he is the man where the buck stops and is ultimately the one acountable. I approve of his attitude, his eye for talent, and his emphasis on strength of character, but he either needs to back off and rely more heavily on his co-ordinators or consider going back to being one himself for a while to remember how to use the talent on the field more efficiently and even more so how to call a game. It also wouldnt hurt if he conseded that the need for an offense is equal to the need for a defense.

The only real problem I have with Nolan is that he is too stubborn. He could probably be a little more knowledgeable when it comes to the offense but I would rather have a head coach that specializes in one thing than one who tries to do everything. I think that with a good, strong offensive coordinator that can run the offense on his own Nolan can be a good coach

I'm going to try and be objective here, and while making that effort I'm probably going to sound a little harsh.
My reasoning:
1. He has a losing record overall, and the team got worse after a year that showed some progress.
2. None of his draft picks other than Patrick Willis have reached their potential (I realize they still can).
3. He has in essence been forced to give up his GM powers, and the defensive play calling. Clear signs to me that he was failing at both of those.
4. He still has his job (which I believe is a good thing).
Grade: D-
Summary: Since he still has a job you can't give him an "F" because technically he hasn't failed yet. However I'd say he's as close as you can get to failing. This is all coming from a big Mike Nolan fan, before Gore and Willis came along Nolan was my favorite Niner. I like his style and attitude and think he'll be a good coach someday (it's been a baptism by fire so far), just hope he can turn it around before it's too late with the Niners.
