I think it might have been Wade Boggs, who wanted to go as a Yankee but went as a Red Sox.

If I'm not mistaken (which I may be, and am often) the controversy began with Wade Boggs.  He finished his career with Tampa Bay, and if I remember the story correctly he agreed to go into the hall as a D-Ray for a certain amount of money.  That obviously would have been a travesty.  Now the HOF takes more control.

unfortunately as a met. in my eyes, piazza will always be a dodger.  i am not a Dodgers fan by any means.  when i first started watching baseball he was a dodger.  when i played triple play 97 (or something like that) he was a dodger.  when i first realized i loved baseball he was a dodger.  to see him play for so many different teams tormented me, but thats how it goes.  thanks for the memories mike.

your first memory should be his name. Piazza NOT Pizzia.  Met fans may not like this but who cares about the Mets in a Yankee town anyways. Piazza's 5 greatest years were as a Dodger.

Piazza will always be a Dodger. First professional game I saw was back in the early 90's at Dodger stadium when I was a little kid. Forever in my heart  as a Dodger blue.

Mike's definitely a 1st ballot Hall of Famer and should be wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers Cap.

To the Met fans out there that think Mike should be wearing a New York Mets cap, this is another case of New Yorker Met fans only discovering a great player after he started to play for their team. As a reminder, Gary Carter had his best years as a Montreal Expo (not a New York Met).

The same is true for Mike Piazza having his greatest years as a Los Angeles Dodger and not as a New York Met. Throw out the Subway Series, the Roger Clemens incident and the "I'm not Gay Press Conference" and Mike basically had an average career as a New York Met.

Dodger Years:

Seasons with team - 5 Full + 2 Partial Seasons (726 Games)

Batting Average - .330 (1080 Hits / 3268 At Bats)

Home Runs - 209

Runs Batting In - 674

Slugging Percentage - .572

On Base Percentage - .593

Awards

1993 NL ROY

1996 All-Star Game MVP

Finished in the Top Ten in MVP Voting Five Times (1993-1997)

Mets Years:

Seasons with team - 7 + 1 Partial season (972 Games)

Batting Average - .296 (1028 Hits / 3478 At Bats)

Home Runs - 220

Runs Batting In - 655

Slugging Percentage - .542

On Base Percentage - .372

Awards

Finished in the Top Ten in MVP Voting Two Times (1999-2000)

Piazza will always be rememered as one of the greatest Mets of all time, and will be enshrined as a Met. The Mets came close to winning it all with him in the central role. I hope I'm not the only Met fan to think this forthcoming idea: Piazza ushered in the era of Met players "knuckling under" when an opposing team gets in their face.  Piazza was called out by Clemens on the 2000 world series repeatedly in that memorable play, and Piazza backed down, and the Mets were smoked in the series.  Imagine if he used his muscles to throw down Clemens and change the momemtum! Now our current Mets are avoiding colisions at homeplate every single time.  To me, the rest of the league smells the Mets lack of killer instinct. Piazza always set a high work ethic, and a great attitude otherwise.  -who will wake up these Mets?
